All,

For the satin black that went on the rockers for RS cars, light exterior paint, did the upper edge fold into the car so you actually saw the black on the near horizontal when you opened the door or did it stop at the effective bottom of the door when the door was shut?

for '69's..  it stops behind the rocker molding....

 If you mean the top edge, I thought it was under the polished strip that was secured to the rocker.
At least for '67.

Sorry ,nothing to add but a few more questions : Were all 68-67 RS blacked out at rockers ?
                                                                       Did it go into lip of front fender/rear quarter ?
                                                                       
My Z did not come with the RS package ,but was added by #2 owner sometime in 69-70 ( Old Reliable look ,down to locking gas cap, SW gauges  ,console  delete)

It's in paint/body now and my guy has been asking how I want it done---body color all the way down past rockers with overspray underneath ,off the line or blacked out ? I'm keeping with the RS look but want it shot correct. Also what " black " was used ?  Same as stripes ,or different shade ?

Once again ,sorry I have nothing to add here but this should expand the thread a bit.

BTY never have and never will try to pass this off as a RS optioned car . At this point it's going to be fun telling the history at meets.

Only light colored cars were blacked out. It is my understanding that the shade was more of a satin finish, same as tail panel for big block 67/68 Camaros. Pretty sure they went from wheel well to wheel well, tracking with the rockers, so in effect everything below RS chrome trim was blacked out.

  When I restored my 67 w/RS option in the 80's what you stated is what my notes mention as for where the blackout edge top was.
Back in the days digital cameras were rare so I have a binder with a lot of hand written notes and a few photos. As for the gloss level, that has been covered a few times here in CRG and I believe the gloss of the firewall, R/S black out and in cases w/big block's, the tail blacked out with the same gloss level. I believe it was John Z. who said something along the lines that it wasn't practical to have separate gloss levels for all those three areas mentioned whic hmakes sense.
  When I restored my 67 ragtop in the 80's I used GM reconditioning black paint for those areas and that looked correct for gloss.

Interesting looking at the survivor, as of Sunday my cars been stripped ---- what was on it matched the pics  so many years ago attention was paid to detail, and it ran the full diameter of the lips. Was always told it was a good idea being " cheap" and easy to touch up stone chips. The color wasn't flat but not quite as much sheen as the survivor.

Now I know. Rockers were correct, take it up a little on the lips than body color--satin---thanks again.

 But the original poster was asking about 1967, I assume, by reading his signature.
It looks like 68-69 was differently applied.

67 still had the same rocker mldgs as the 69. My 67 RS/SS has blacked out rockers and the black ends under the rocker mldg.

Where does the black paint top lay on yours? Inside and visible in the door sill area?
If so then that would mean the black paint top border extended above the spear moulding.

I can't thank you all enough. You have flushed out what I intend to do. Mine is an original RS/SS with original tranny/rear-end, but the original engine is long gone. I was able to find a correctly coded SS-350 that was sent through the same factory six weeks after the car. Both car and engine being stamped in '66.

She will be built exactly to the trim tag, however I have taken some liberties...

All suspension, brakes, steering, sway bars, etc... are new. Sound deadening throughout.

On the sill, I will have everything below the trim and wrapped up into the interior like shown in the '68 then call it a day.

Thanks again very much. I went after sill questions a while back with 'crickets' as a response. Seems like this is a tough question to definitively answer.
