Differences in exhaust kit for 67 ss350 vs 67 z28?
« on: August 28, 2013, 01:19:02 AM »
Hey guys,

I will be buying an exhaust system kit through D&R for my 67rs/ss and was curious to see if anyone knows if their 2-1/4" kit (z00086-2) listed for a 67/68 z28 will fit my ss350 in the stock mounting locations with their stock hangers and hardware.

I know they have a 2" system (z00086) listed for a 67/68 but was hoping the bigger system would fit with no modifications???

I plan on calling and asking D&R the same question but wanted to see if anyone here has first hand knowledge before I call...

I bought my exhaust system from D&R as well and noticed the two sizes offered.  I bought the 2-1/4" system for my 69 SS and it fit fine.

Thanks for the input. From the picture it looks like the same system. I am going to go for the larger system as well then.

Do you know if they provide the inserts that fit in the  head pipes that the donut packing gasket fits around?

Here is their exhaust catalog. The donuts are shown but don't know what I am looking for in the inserts. Sorry...

Here is a link to that (Z28) system specifically; http://www.drclassic.com/catalog/Camaro/Exhaust/Z00086-2.html
Does not show the inserts, maybe you could call and ask.  (800) 472-6952    I've used several of their products with no issues.

Just a side note....I called them once and they stated they really make two different versions of the kit.  One version has the long, one piece, exhaust pipes that go all the way to the rear hangers.  The other version has the shorter exhaust pipes and the resonator eliminators to extend the exhaust pipe out to the hangers (this is the version shown in catalog and will be the version shipped unless noted otherwise).  Don't know whether they still carry the two versions....you might want to give them a call if you are interested in the one piece exhaust pipes.

As far as I know I believe you need the inserts to keep the donut gasket from getting out of round and getting crushed. Other than HBC, no one offers them with their kits.

Yep. HBC is the only place that carries them. You would think that those inserts would be available with the rest of the small parts needed to install a new exhaust at the other repro stores but they aren't.

Yeah, probably so, if there was a custom shop that does that kind of stuff. What most here fail to realize in the small little towns you have to go to the bigger cities to get things like this done, at least here in the local Dover, Delaware area. There use to be a decent Midas Muffler shop years ago in my area, but they pulled up stakes and nothing has ever replaced it. For the most part if I want an exhaust I have to either go to Philly, New Jersey or Maryland somewhere, or order on-line. Still would need the inserts though. We have lots of car dealers, and huge lot of restaurants and hotels. Dover Downs is 15 minutes down the road from me but none of these places do exhaust systems. Even the last speed and machine shop left us last year.
