1969 OEM AM antenna question.
« on: August 05, 2013, 09:07:22 PM »
Hello everybody. I have a question or two, or three about the OEM factory AM antenna's for the 69 model year. Were the AM antenna's the same for A, B, and F models? If so was the tip plain or did they all have a groove middle way around it? Reason I'm asking is because I bought an AM mast for my 69 Impala that I'm going to assume is a correct oval type for at least the 69 Impala but not sure if it is correct only because I have never seen one for comparisons sake. This mast I bought has no groove around the tip. Is there something on antennas here on CRG? I didn't see anything unless I just haven't toughed on it yet. Just being curious. Was there a replacement that just had the plain tip?

The 69 Camaro AM antenna was also used on the 69 Corvair. The P&A 32 Accessories Manual shows the part number to be 986925. The full size cars used antenna P/N 993629. I can't help you on the full size antenna, but tips with and without the groove have been observed on the Camaro. HERE'S some good info.

Thanks Ed. Looking at Fred's antenna in the link you provided looks like there are grooves in the mast as well but the tip doesn't look like it's grooved. The other pic has the grooved tip and it is shaped the same as mine with no groove. An AM mast, is a mast, is a mast, is a mast, correct no matter what model it was on. Would there be different ones for different models? I'm thinking there was one AM and one AM/FM mast for all models but thats just a guess on my part. There is an NOS mast on ebay right now.

I can't say if the masts themselves are the same. The part numbers I quoted above are for the antenna assemblies. Mast, base, cable, etc...

I've asked Warren to comment so stay tuned.

Thanks. Something I did notice looking for a mast, some screw in and some slide in the base.

The '69 Camaro AM antenna simply slid into the base, but it had two "teeth" on it that engaged similar "teeth" on the base so the antenna could be oriented with the chord of the "airfoil" shape fore-aft for minimum air resistance, and the stainless nut retained the antenna to the base.

3-'69 NOS AM masts, 1-'68 NOS AM mast for your perusal. The other NOS jacket, 370147, is the AM/FM solid mast. All of my NOS 68-9 masts have grooved tips, as does the original AM mast on my 01C X77 car. If you need any other detail pics let me know.

This auction is a '68 (and earlier) mast - bodies are completely different between '68's and '69's - mast cross section is the same, as is the length.

See the tag attached to the NOS mast in my pic #4 above - instructions on how to align the mast during installation; JohnZ always nails it.

Thanks guys. Really good info. How's it going Warren? I didn't think there would be any differences really but just had to ask. I'm still curious about the tip though. Shaun from the SS427 website had one I bought that has no groove on the tip and was wondering why. Looks good overall and the tip looks the same as the ones posted but no groove. Just one of those curious observations I get. Should there be a groove or not? Probably need more info.

This website is great. I can't say enough about all the help you guys have given me in the past even for the common parts that fit other vehicles, this is the place to find stuff out. No messing around here, just straight to the point.

There was an earlier thread a couple of months ago pertaining to the antenna tip being grooved or not.   As I recall, some original cars had each.  My 09C original car has a non grooved tip.

This is what I got from Donny about the masts being the same:

""Yep. Flat with 1 groove on the top knob
AM that is. FM is a 30" spring steel whip."

One groove on the top knob? So the tip should have a groove then.

My Original 08C am antenna mast does not have a grove. Maybe it was a vendor change mid year?
