1967 RS
« on: July 18, 2013, 03:22:06 AM »
Hello All,
First posting here and I'd like to thank CRG upfront for a FANTASTIC site. I can't imagine the amount of effort and resources that has gone into all this information!
With that said - here's what I have:
I just purchased a 1967 RS that was in a garage for 28 years (Lic. plates & inspec. sticker are from 1985)
I have the protecto plate/book and all the registrations from 1967-1985 (from the orig. owner) Car looks to be very orig. with exception of what looks like a skim cote of body filller and repaint that is maybe 30 years old (paint quality is pretty bad)
Trying to determine if this is a true L30/M20 car?
VIN:124377L114810
I think I've decoded everything except the rear end which has a 10 bolt cover and multi-leaf springs (I think this may be one of the few mod's. no trac bar or single leaf)
Engine is stamped T1007ML and matches the POP (327/275)
Bock is stamped 3903352
4 speed trans case is stamped R7R24 and matches the POP. Shifter has had a Hurst upgrade.
Cowl tag ties back to what the car is as it sits and matches the POP (Bolero Red, Black buckets, AM radio, etc.)
POP shows the trans and engine builds from 10/67 with a car build of 11/67 - so that looks good too.

My question comes back to the the cowl tag which in the lower left corner does not show a "4P"?
This is the only item that does not seem to tie into what I've read on the L30/M20 cars

Its pretty much untouched under the hood - lots of scale but runs fine. No build sheet under the rear seat- but I havent
pulled the seats yet.

Hoping this was a good buy and will be a great project for my son and I

Any input would be much appreciated - Thanks

Others will chime in but I believe that the 4P code didn't show up until later then you November build date.

Welcome to the CRG.  Sounds like your car was built close to mine 11A, (actually believe it was built Nov. 1 st.)   Mine is also Bolero Red with Black standard Bucket interior, but not an L30 car.

I would like to get more info on this car you posted about (124377L114810).
If you can help, I need a picture of the cowl tag, POP and where the speedometer cable comes through the firewall.

The car should not have the 4P on the cowl tag, it is a little to early for that.

Thanks all for the comments. Seems this car codes out to is a true <early> L30/M20 car. I finally got to cleaning the rear end and the code there is PA1026G - which also matches the POP as an early 10 bolt along with the engine code and Saginaw trans. I also discoverd it has the dealer installed <70/71 recall> torq cable attached - so another check in the right column. One outstanding item seems be with the power steering. This car has power steering - but no code N40 on the POP. It also has the factory gauges. I'm pretty sure the gauges were an easy dealer add, but what about the power steering? Julian date in the steering box reads 251^6 (251 st day of '66) - which is right in the range of the trans and rear end build date (and prior to the build date of the car which was 11A. ??

The N40 was probably just missed on the POP.  The U17 was not coded on the cowl tag or POP, so I bet it was factory also.

In your original statement you do mean built 11-'66 right, not '67?

My 11A  LOS built car is about 1100 cars ahead of yours, and my P. Steering gear box is much closer to build date.  There's a pic. of my Gear box here;
There is a pic. here of my original P. Steering pump for my 11A (66)built '67 Coupe with Julian Date stamped on top (276 6)it has the year stamped.

Here's a few pictures as found after 28 years in storage. Haven't done much other than getting her running and decoding everthing. As mentioned earlier - really bad paint job from the 80's (to include missing trim)
p.s. - noticed when I was taking the pictures that the rear tag frame is from the orig. dealership - Ed Taylor Chevrolet in San Diego. Kinda cool.
