Exhaust manifold bolts.
« on: July 11, 2013, 03:43:32 AM »
Are the exhaust manifold bolts all the same length for the 69 small block and other then the french locks were there any washers used at all? Looking to get new bolts for my 69 Z engine but need this info on washers beforehand. Thanks guys.

No french locks on center bolts with flat washers, just torque them to 35 ft/lbs.
Outside pairs have flat washers and french locks and torqued to 15 ft/lbs allowing for heat/cold cycles of cast iron manifold(s).

Yeah, gotcha on the french locks not on the center ports. Just needed to know if all the bolts got the washers including the french locks.

Any particular place to get the most correct parts or do you have to order this from there and that from another there? No one seems to carry an all in one kit.

Hey Daniel, you have number handy? I haven't looked yet but I was going to see what I could find in the 69 AIM if is even in there.

Gary, be aware the french locks available from AMK and other parts vendors are made of stainless steel which is incorrect. The originals were stamped untreated steel. GM still sells the steel ones (GM part# 14081241) however the stamping has changed and they are not the correct appearance for our cars. I located used ones, treated them with Evapo Rust and they work well for an unrestored car.

Thanks Lloyd. I wasn't planning on using the stainless pieces. I just need the bolts and washers. Other than the set of french locks that are on my unmolested 46000 mile 69 Impala, I have never seen another set. I can guarantee that there probably isn't a yard within 100 miles of me that would have one old engine in it to rob those locks off of. It seems most of the smaller stuff I need to purchase I have to count on members who might have this stuff stashed away. Well...time for a WTB add on T.C.

For a 69 Z - should the French locks be the rounded or square tab? Also - I think only the center bolts got washers - yes? No?
Thanks

Don't forget A/C cars have two longer bolts for the rear compressor mount :)
