Z28 grill and tailpanel emblem question.
« on: April 13, 2013, 03:17:49 PM »
Are these emblems the same for the grill and tailpanel? I just bought a used set and was told original. Both fender emblems have CBC C-1 P-3949968, and the supposed front and rear have 8745869  9901 with one emblem having a number 1 (silver paint 28) and the other having a number 2 (white paint 28) cast in it. Here is the link were I got them.

I've been suspecting the ones on my car for a while but have never pulled them off to verify. The fender emblems 'Z' looks a bit orange in color.

Just curious to find out.

This a follow up to my first post if anyone whats to know what I have found for their records.

Ok. So far just by looking at the front and rear emblems on my car, and without taking them off, I found that they are NOT the same in that the mounting studs are placed in different locations. So it appears that I have bought 2 used tail panel emblems and not a grill and tail panel emblem. My bad I suppose. One has a white painted '28' (service replacement) the other silver painted '28' (original from researching). The casting numbers are in my first post. I'll have to pull the grill emblem to get a cast number for it unless someone can post IT and not the part number unless of course that is the part number. Anyone?

On the used fender emblems I bought I think I can safely say they are originals from my research. Both are cast with the same number as in my first post. I THINK the fender emblems on my car may be reproductions only because when I looked inside the passenger fender well I could see where bondo was oozing thru some holes and the off center stud was missing and after 45 years, who knows. On the outside both the emblems were not flush by any means and the 'Z' was orange and not red.

I have my originals off. 8745869 is the rear. I have my original front and some reason 2 spares. I don't find a part number in any of them. The boxes of the 2 nos ones i have are
3958642. Odd thing is, box for back 1 has different part number than the emblem. Maybe it came with nuts?
The front emblem has studs that are close to 2 inches long and has tabs on the z and 8 to fit into grill

Jerry's book shows 3958642 as the front. His rear number is 8701333 which is on a box I have but emblem is different

So far it appears there have been differences in IDing the emblems, whether they are original factory or service replacements, what part of the year they were installed, and how many molds with differing numbers, white spray in the '28' instead of silver. Might be a good add on to the CRG information base. Not sure if this is something that would need to be addressed. There are posts asking about pepple grain and non pepple grain steering wheels, which was a surprise to me. Never even noticed it until it was asked.

I still have to pull my grill emblem off and check. probably do it sometime today and post what I find. For the tail panel emblem so far 8745869 is on the 3 I have.

Yeah John I made a copy for reference while I was researching these used emblems I just bought. The fender emblems are good candidates for restoring, really nice chrome but real faded paint. I just need to find what is being done to restore them and what paint. Not much of anything online about this subject and it seems like most if not all aren't doing it themselves.
