Azure 1969 Z
« on: March 05, 2013, 06:14:52 PM »
I have spent this winter nursing a broken leg, reading posts and looking at other peoples cars. I think it's time to get mine back on the road. I have an azure turquoise (55/55) purchased in 1982 from the 2nd owner. I drove the car for one summer and garaged it. I opted to drive my 1970.5 Rally Sport as my daily driver (I'm glad I did because the RS got well used) I purchased the 70.5 from the original owner and added paint, custom stripes and later high back buckets. I sold the RS in 89 to pay for honeymoon expenses.
Anyway my 69 has been garaged through the raising of 3 kids and I am now hoping to give some of my attention to the car.
I have been asked to post pics of the car but it is in primer waiting for a repaint (repaint, new headliner and detail/clean up) I will not do a complete restoration as the car retains the original carpet, seats, door panels etc. I think original with  a little wear is better than replacing parts w/ reproduction stuff.
I am posting pics of the original hood because I love the colour (put the cowl stuff on over 30 years ago and will be putting the flat hood back) I just have not been able to make myself take sand paper to the original paint on the hood.
And just for fun I am posting pics of my 70.5 I heard it was totaled after I sold it (for $3500 in 1989)
Here is some info Re my 69Z

•   Azure Turquoise w/ Black Stripes
•   Flat Hood
•   Factory Front and Rear Spoiler
•   Style Trim Package
•   Ivory Standard Interior
•   AM/FM Push Button Radio (original front and rear speaker)
•   Console w/Gauges
•   Clock,7K Tach,
•   Tilt Column w/ Rosewood Wheel (wear but no cracks)
•   Endura Bumper (original)
•    I have the protect-o-plate documenting it is an original DZ car w/ Holley carb and the car has the original vin numbered 302 and M-20 (never checked the rear end #. The car was built in Jan 1969 and has the correct dated original DZ carb and 411 posi

Somebody tell me I am wrong. 411,s are 10 bolt gears and 410,s are 12 bolt gears. Talking about factory stuff not aftermarket.

From the factory, there was a 4.10 12 bolt axle. There wasn't a 4.11 ratio.

As low as you could go in a 10 bolt was 3.55

Could be my bad. Like I said I have never done much research on the rear end. It is a 12 bolt and is a posi. for sure. I remember counting the drive line to wheel rotation and was was more than 4 and less than 4.5. So who cares 410 / 411 posi = not so fast on the freeway but great use of the 4-7k rpm targeted cam range on take off : ) (oh and monster brodies) there I dated myself I said brodies

Unless one pulls the cover (or chunk, in the case of the older rears), and counts teeth, or reads the numbers written on the gears, the way to know your ratio is to check rotations of the driveshaft and tires, and there's not much difference in 4.10 and 4.11..  :)          4.10 has 41 teeth on the ring gear and 10 on the pinion, whereas 4.11's have 37 teeth on the ring and 9 on the pinion.

I hear guys say 4.11 and 4.10 all the time, mixing up the 2.  I have a 65 Mustang fastback and 4.11 is a Ford ratio. But you will hear a ford guy say he is going to put back the factory 4.10 rear end, when really he means the factory 4.11. And same thing with Camaro guys, I hear them say they think there car cam with 4.11 from the factory, when really it is a 4.10. Thats my take on why you hear both numbers mistaken for each other.

Make sure to have some panels sprayed out to ensure you get a color match you are happy with. Sometimes going from a single step lacquer to a base clear changes the refractory characteristics and it may "look" different.

Great Looking car. Like to 70.5 as well. I had a '71 Z28 in 1979, my first car. It had a transplanted drive train from a total 1970 Z28. 4:10 rear gear M22 and real factory LT1. When I bought the car the drive train was long gone and replaced, with a generic motor and non posi hiway diff. That car was a rocket ship. I really miss it. That is whty I am putting the same drive train in my '69. Looking forward to pics when you get it painted. Azure is one of my favorite colours.

I think your car is going to look great with the flat hood. I know the ZL-2 hood is good looking, but a Z/28 with a flat hood says real deal to me. You know if you see a car with all the Z emblems and then the guy had the idea of running the flat hood that it lends credibility to the rest of the car. I can't remember ever seeing a clone or fake being passed off as a original Z with a flat hood. But maybe its just me....
