1968 special customized promotional car
« on: March 05, 2013, 01:31:32 AM »
Hello.. I have an original 68 sales promotional car. I am the second owner of this car and bought it from a family friend in 1973 with 18k miles on it, now it has appx 110k. I can not find much info on this car and would like to know more as I am restoring this car for the 2nd time, not sure if I should leave it stock. It needs some small parts like the  fiber optic cable for the rear tail lights etc. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Bartman

Not enough info to help provide an answer.
Who customized? Whose promotion?
Gotta pic?

This is a car that chevy produced for their sales promotion. What I have found so far over many years is that  a dealer may have received maybe 1 of these cars to put on the floor to promote the Camaro. I am not sure of the numbers that were produced.. once I saw production numbers however I can not remember where... appx 1200 cars I think. This car color is Rallye Green, I do not know the codes for the options however I was told a long time ago that these cars all came with the same options... bucket seats, power steering, a/c, power brakes, stainless trim, front and back seat belts, console w/ rear ashtray and lite, rear spoiler, vigalante lites, 327 w/4barrel carb, power glide trans, single leaf spring, nose stripe, standard front lites. I would like to keep it original.. however a nice hot rod would be nice .. I was told and I think this makes sense to put 4 wheel disk brakes on the car for safety reasons..
Thanks

Are you talking about the 68 promo cars that had to be ordered in "Rallye Green, Brite Green, Corvette Bronze, or LeMans Blue exterior"?
I've seen them mentioned on other Camaro web sites but have never seen a picture, etc. that showed that they ever existed.

Yes t is 1 of the promo cars......I'm not sure if I have any pics of the car... it is apart being repainted/restored..  they look like a standard Camaro with the exception of the bullets on the front fenders for the vigilante lites.. also has a rear spoiler..

Why do you think it's a promotional Chevy car, if everything on it is standard or optional equipment?

I'm pre-supposing that the 68 trim tag would be no help... What's the build date? Did any paperwork come with the car?  Or a Protecto Plate?
Like 69Z28-RS said, without documentation it is going to be hard to ID it as a promo car, because it would have been a well-equipped standard car.

As for the fiber optic cable, there is a current thread running on that topic:

What other parts do you need?

The car is apart at the moment being repainted.. I purchased the car in 1973 from family friends who bought the car from the dealer off the floor.. not an optioned car... I have been looking for the book that had these cars listed however I can not remember where I read it at. From what I have read the  vigalante lite option is rare and in combo with all of the other options is exactly how Chey did the Promo cars. This car is original. I am the 2nd owner and have owned it since 1973.

I believe this is just an urban myth. I've never heard or seen any hint of this promotion and I've seen lots of docs & data from GM and cars over the years.
All cars were built to an order. The order was either for the customer, dealer, or fleet.
This sounds like a well-optioned car, but I don't see anything that would make it customized or promotional. Could have been ordered by the dealer as a showroom car.

post a pic of the trim tag

Who was the original dealer?

You can try to find if anyone is still around, from the original dealer, that may know about it
