Does anyone know what a flat white tip big block would have been for?
I’ve read back where some corvette owners have said their big block had a white tip but no pics and assumed round handle. This was in 68/69 model years.

You are correct!

I checked the faint writing on the masking tape attached to it. Pulled from a 1972 402 (396) engine. So it’s not the original shape for 68-70. Good eye!

Yellow is 68 and 69 big block. 70 too I think.  Light red/salmon is 67 big block. The red reproductions are too “red” and should be somewhere between red and pink. I will see if I can find an original and post if I find one. The green tips I have are from original 69 to 72 engines.

I have had probably more than my share of experience with dipsticks.  :)

Red, yellow, gray, brown, etc.  Red one shown is a newer reproduction. Others are original.
The yellow tip is a later service replacement is it not?
John Jay, I believe our great contributor JohnZ had stated what’s on your stick is a later service replacement but lots of questions on some dipsticks.
Sorry, my comment on your pictured yellow dipstick refers to that one being a later service replacement due to the deep dimple piercing noted on later service replacements.

Checked my 68/69 NCRS judging manual #4 and it states 427 dipsticks have a round handle with white tip but at date 7/22/69 per Corvette AIM went to long angled handle with a flattened finger hold and no plug which was used intermittently with the white tipped dipstick until very late in the model year.

That’s possible.

Remember the dipstick was added at the vehicle assembly plant. So a BBC Corvette could have been different than other models.

White is correct for L6 at least in 1968 and probably other years. Length is obviously different than SBC or BBC.

Darrel do you have a pic of the white tip one you mentioned? Or length?

Hello CRG,

I am doing research on dip sticks.  I purchased this NOS stick around 1996 - 1998 from Rick George when he operated Rick's 1st Gen Camaro, while I was restoring my Norwood 05A '69 Z28, VIN 638712.  I am looking for my original dip stick, as I don't recall if it has a flat or round handle.  According to Heartbeat City Camaro (they purchased Rick George's inventory), the green tip sticks they sell now do not have the dimple like the late NOS GM version.  My stick does have the dimple in the handle just above the cap seal.  This stick states "USE SE ENGINE OIL   3951576   M."  The stick measure 19-5/16" from the tip to the top edge of the seal cap.

Does anyone else have the same dip stick with the dimple?

Follow up 2nd question...

Heartbeat City Camaro (HBC) list item #EGP-1495 flat handle dip stick replacement for GM 3951576 as the 1st Design, and item EGP-1494 round handle with green tip replacement stick as the 2nd design.

From what I can tell, the 1st Design flat handle design appears to be what was originally installed at the factory on most '69 Camaro small blocks (per Jerry MacNeish certification reports).  Any idea when the  2nd Design was released and if it was only a service replacement dip stick?  My factory parts catalog does not list different part numbers for the two designs.  I wonder if the "M" stamped in the stick of my round handle unit indicates a design revision change?

Dipsticks with the dimple u show are later gm service replacements and are not found on survivor sticks.
