SS striping for my April 3rd week car
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:05:59 AM »
Deep in to the restoration on my 68 SS and need help. Can some one tell me would my car have the bumbel bee striping or the later striping down the door as I thought I had read some where here that this happened some where around this April time frame. Thanks

January 2nd, 1968 was the official changover date. At that time the factory went from the D91 (Bumblebee) stripe to the D90 stripe. Your car should have the D90 stripe.

Well just when I thought I had my stripe all figured out now I am wandering what color would have came on my ZZ British Green car with black standard interior and black vinyl top? Please help think it would have been black or would white make it pop?

Look here:

http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#ExteriorColors

and  you will find that British Green (Z paint code) came with white striping.

As Ed mentioned, British Green was one of the new colors that came in the January changeover.

And white really does pop on British Green.  ;D

Post us a picture of your car (in whatever stage you are in) and of the trim tag...

DLD,
When faced with the same issue with a LeMans blue/black top I went for a black stripe Three tone just did not do it for me. The paint is two shot anyway. I am pleased with my choice. GM defaulted to match the top on some colors and so did I.  Google Camaro pictures, You may find  both samples.
  Good luck

Thanks for all the info and input now that I have some much originality in this car I up against another dilemma. Seems they do not make British green in lacquer and must go with base/coat clear/coat so I think I will have to go with painting the stripe white verses trying to match up with half paint and half decal. I am with you vtfb68 we had thought a black stripe would blend in much nicer before I found out it was white in 68

But no vinyl top.
I'm the last one to talk you out of the vinyl top...
If it is a ZZ, you've already moved away from original...
Is you car a BB?

Man lakeholme did I misunderstand what you were trying to show me. For years I was looking at the ZZ code as British not knowing the double ZZ meaning top and bottom.  Would there have been any chance of a vinyl top being installed at the dealer ship. Why would anyone install one later? I bought this car from a drag racer and was just putting it back as I thought it was since it had one on it when I purchased. But it would be stupid to leave it on. I know that just trying to make sense of it all.
As far as paint they tell me they can not get ppg in lacquer any more, is that not true! Will I really devalue upgrading to base c/clear c.

You can get PPG lacquer from TCP Global. I got all my paint from them. I had a hard time trying to get my interior paint code mixed. I called PPG library and they faxed a formula and wasn't even close but these guys mixed it spot on.  Oh BTW the code for the White for the stripes is code 50 Dover White PPG paint code 2058.

Yes many vinyl tops were dealer installed. Sometimes if a car didn't sell they would add a top to change it up and try to make it more appealing to customers.

Take a look at this...
Can't believe I'm saying this, but your car would look best as factory original -ZZ, no top, white stripe.
IMHO.

I have a 68 L78 ZZ paint code 04B Camaro it has the White SS stripe and black standard interior.  I do not believe this color ever came with a black stripe. The British Racing green ZZ code paint was popular color when it came out mid year production..i.e. about Jan or Feb 68...  My tail panel is black...

Any one know when the first ZZ code car came out?
