What is the excepted rule of thumb for the cowl tag unit number to be within the last 6 of the vin?

Example: NOR plant start number 300001                          389641 - 300001 = *89640
My VIN is 389641
 My NOR Cowl Tag 89673
                         *89640
                 


Where is the 33 car discrepency?

Canceled orders?

What happend to those 33 numbered sequences?

There is no direct correlation ie. no catch all formula to apply here.
The body numbers were the order numbers and some cars were held waiting for needed parts even though they were ordered before a certain other vehicle... so you could have body number that is numerically lower built later in the year than another.

In '69, the body number was assigned when the dealer order was accepted for production, not when the body was actually built; on the other hand, the Chevrolet VIN number was assigned after the finished body was received by Chevrolet and actually entered the production system. No direct correlation unit-by-unit.

Also refer to CRG article at the following link:  http://www.camaros.org/bodynumbering.shtml   As posted above by JohnZ and as the article states, body numbers for 1969 were issued out of a central office to both VN and NOR at the time the order was accepted. As the article mentions:(for example, 220340 may have been built at NOR and 220341 may have been built at VN).

My VIN ends in 581767.  VIN sequencing for '69 NOR production begins with 500001.  VIN # 581767 = 81,766 1969 Camaro built at Norwood. 

Body number is  220831.  Do we happen to know what the first body # was for Camaro for 1969?  Did they begin with 200,000?  What is the earliest '69 Body Number in the database?

I am assuming that the Fisher Body Numbers must have begun with a much lower number than 200,000 for 1969.  If the body numbers for VN and NOR began at 200,000, then I am really confused.  Body number of 220831 wouldn't even be in the same ballpark with VIN #581767.
