Horn Button Repair, R & R Tricks

Can anybody do a little run thru with me as I have not pulled a steering wheel in 20 years. The horn button is frozen and will not depress. It is a N34 wheel. Disconnect battery? How does the cap come off. Pry it up with a rubber tipped tool, or carefully with screwdriver? Then I think I remember a trick of backing off the nut until it is at the end of it's threads, then give it a good whack with a single jack? Which if I remember helps pop loose the wheel. Then what? Interior pic's would be great..... Danny

Oh yes....I agree...use a puller! The wheel may be brittle by now and I would not want to risk any stress cracks developing due to hitting it.
The cap should pry off. The rubber holding it may be hard so it may take some effort to free it.

I still strongly suggest picking up a Chilton's repair manual for your car.  #28280  Very wisely spent 30 or so dollars. ( 24.99 at Autozone)

I have created quite an extensive library over the years. Good place to jot down part numbers ,(consumables) notes about the car ,etc... Then throw it in your trunk with a few basic hand tools. May help to get you home one night if you break down while out cruising.

I agree with using a puller, I have pulled many over the years.  And I agree with the Chilton repair manual suggestion, I have an older edition 6735 only covers 67 up to 79, but it has what I need.  Also the internet can be very helpful through Google search, a lot of times I'll print it out and save it.(with my repair manuals)  Below find a diagram of a Grant wheel. I think the N34 wheel has a very similar mount.  You should be able to turn the horn button an inch or so one way or the other and it will get to a spot where it will pop right off.

Here's a pic. out 67 A.I.M, N34.  I'm told this page is missing in the 68 A.I.M.  You will need to pull the Hub (#1) in the pic. with a puller.  You may be able to borrow a puller at Auto Zone or similar Auto parts place.  Hope this helps.

A steering wheel puller is less than ten bucks at your local auto parts store.
