Numbers on 69 Muncie 4 speed linkage
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:29:00 PM »
Is there any way to correctly identify 1969 Camaro Muncie 4 speed shifter rods for a big block?  Do any of them have numbers stamped on them?  I bought about 8 rods from a guy and he said he used to have a correct 69 big block shifter, but sold it years ago without the linkage.  He thought some of the linkage he sold me was correct for that shifter, but I don't know how to identify them.

Were the big block shifter rods thicker than the ones used for the small block or the same size?

Thanks in advance.

Some of the GM rods will have the last few digits of the part number on them but not all. Most aftermarket reproductions will not have the numbers but there are some that do. The GM parts are HEAVY.

Big block rods are different than small block rods but that is only because the shifter bracket for a big block is different from a small block. Same transmission, same console but the engine and tranny are not located in the same place so the shifter bracket, the crossmember and the linkage rods are all different. Small blocks are centered in the chassis and big blocks are off-set to the passenger side a bit.

OK, that helps.  But are the big block rods any thicker than the small block rods?

And does anyone have any good pictures so I can compare?  I did see the ones in Jerry's 69 book, but
hard to do a physcial comparison with a photo that smalll.

Well I looked them all over closely.  A few are are marked.  Here are the ones marked 0073, 96117, 5612, U, D.

A couple also have a mark that lookis like an M over a W.

Any idea what the ones that are marked are for?  All of these have a thickness about 7/16 inch?

None of these may be correct.  Even the ones that are not marked.

Pull out your AIM and look at the tranny linkage part numbers. The digits on the rods would need to agree with the last digitsd of the rods part numbers shown in the diagrams for a given combination.

OK, I can check that for some cars.  But I don't have an AIM for every car.

Does ANYYONE know of a listing of shifter rod numbers for multiple years?

OK I did some searching around and found some numbers, so I thought I would post them.  I hope they are accurate.

1969 Muncie shifters
OEM shifter housing is stamped 3138
OEM Round stick #5325, slips into the yoke and is held by a tang

OEM Hurst Linkage
302, 350 & 396 CID       Lever Arms    1&2 8541,     3&4 8541,     Reverse 5769.
302, 350                      Rods            1&2 1876,     3&4 1885,      Reverse 5765,    Reverse Lockout 5773.
396                             Rods            1&2 5775,     3&4 5777,      Reverse 5779,    Reverse Lockout 5776.

But I still have no idea what the rods I have are originally from.

Your rods may be aftermarket Hurst or OEM Firebird.

Firebird used the OEM Hurst from 68 to at least 79.
Camaro used it 69-71

Hurst aftermarket rods for 69 Camaro are 5307, 2145, 3691

There were many different OEM rods and they are not the same but some will  work on the the 69 Camaro
I have seen all kinds of rods made to fit on 1st gen Camaros

It appears the 0073 rod I have is the 3-4 rod for 68 Camaro small block.  Not sure on the others.  Might be for Impala or Chevelle.

Looks like for 68 the rods are

Small block  Rods    1&2 3930071     3&4 3930073     Reverse 3930075
Big block     Rods    1&2 3930063     3&4 3930065     Reverse 3930067

1968 Camaro would have a Muncie shifter rod.
0073 can also be a Hurst aftermarket rod

The Munice rods are normally a larger diameter rod then a Hurst aftermarket rod

GI JOE,

You say the 5612 rod is an early 69 BB rod?  Are there any other numbers for "early" rods?
