Steering wheel codes
« on: February 27, 2010, 01:55:16 AM »
Long time lurker, first time to poster though......

I've been thru the search, and read thru the Steering Wheel Research Report, but can't find anything concerning the small number/letter code stamped/molded into the lower back side of the wheel next to the bottom spoke of some wheels I have.

First wheel is a '71-up Cushion Grip with either the letter "O" or the number "0".
Second wheel is a GSX/Yenko Duece with a "2".
Third wheel is a another GSX/Yenko Duece this time with a "D".

Can anyone tell me what these letters/numbers mean?

Thanks!

Most likely they're injection mold number identifiers (like pattern numbers on iron castings).

Interesting, never thought of that. Thanks.
Any other ideas/opinions?

I worked in the rubber/plastic molding industry for many years and concur with John.

Markings on individual parts may have no relationship to application. In some cases there may be more than one supplier for a part and each needs to have unique ID. A part that is very similar to others may have the last 4 digits of the GM part number. This is often seen on shift linkage. For example the '69 Camaro lower lock-out rod for a sb Muncie was #3955773 and is stamped 5773.
