69 Camaro Z/28 front sway bar and power steering bracket
« on: April 04, 2006, 01:32:45 AM »
Two questions. Front one inch factory sway bar ground off at ends appears to be done to clear upper ball joint nut, was this done at factory or by someone over time. Ads in Classic catalog show copies of originals that look like they have the ground off ends also.  Also I have a two piece power steering pump bracket the second piece bolts between the engine block and the motor mount, is this correct I am hearing conflicting answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

That's not a factory sway bar - all '69 Camaros used an 11/16" bar (except for the 13/16" bar on COPO 9737's); the end of the factory bar was nowhere near the upper ball joint (see photo below). The rear power steering pump bracket goes on top of the motormount, not between the mount and the block, as shown in the Assembly Manual.

Thanks. OK Then was the 1 inch bar a dealer option. This car has been parked since before 1991, the sway bar mounts on subframe appear to be as aged as anything else. And the sway bar has been on long enough to develop over a quarter inch slop in its rubber cradles on subframe. Right now a guy is offering a 1 inch bar on ebay claiming its a Z/28 offroad swaybar. The thing should be plated in gold for what he is asking.

Sounds like the car you're looking at has an older aftermarket (probably ADDCO) sway bar, and the guy on eBay doesn't know what he's talking about (as usual).

John Z.  When I bought my 1969 z/28 about 25-30 Years ago. The owner who claimed that
he was road racing the vehicle threw in the trunk a few extra components. It included
a 15/16 front sway bar and two front coil springs with a tag that had the numbers
3935784. Do you know if these are GM off-road springs by the part numbers? And
could this be a gm sway bar?

There were five over-the-counter front stabilizer bars available, from 3/4" to 1-1/16", and there were five over-the-counter HD springs from 500 to 777 pounds per inch; the 3935784 was among them, and has a load rate of 615 pounds per inch. The 15/16" stabilizer bar was P/N 3962797.
