Rear Brake Casting Numbers
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:45:15 PM »
Does anyone know what numbers should be cast into the rear brake drums of a 1967 ss350rs coupe, power manual brakes, manual steering? The vehicle is a Van Nuys build, 2nd week in February 67 build. I'm thinking the number should be 3893560, W-2X. Thanks.. Dan

Thanks for the info. Was that casting part number unique to Camaro, or was it also used on 67 Chevelle, Nova, Firebird, etc. Is there a source which explains usage? Thanks.. Dan

Thanks Tom. Can you tell me what the 'interchange book' you referenced is? Is there a source where I could get a copy. I'm trying to figure out what casting part numbers could be found on 67 camaro's with rear drum brakes. So far I have three number that are possible: 3841177, 3893560 and your number 3987445. All 9-1/2 x 2, non finned. What I don't know is if the first two were for metallic or non-metallic. Thanks.. Dan

Available at most auto swaps from book vendors, and my local book store.
"Chevrolet Parts Interchange Manual"
it covers the years 59 - 70
Cover price is 24.95 US, I think I paid like 18 from a book vendor at a swap meet.

Part numbers and casting numbers can be different.

Metallic brake '67 Camaros used the same 3841177 drums on the rear as other Camaros but with a different surface finish inside to allow better seating with the metallic brake shoes. I have not personally observed other casting numbers besides the 3841177 in use on '67 Camaros.

Jon I just picked up a pair of nos front drums for my 67 L78. I knew they needed to have a different surface finish on them . If I take them to a machine shop do you have any idea what I shoud tell them as for the finish, Thanks Kerry

Kerry,

The instruction sheet for the metallic brake shoes states as follows:

"Mount brake drums in grinder and true up bore by taking a light cut. Using a dressed #80 abrasive wheel and a slow feed, grind the bore and maintaining the same setting, repeat the grind operation. This second grind operation should give the required finish which is essential for satisfactory operation of these brakes.  Note: Finish of brake drums should be comparable to the finish on engine cylinder walls. Since no oversize shoe and facing assemblies are available at present, the drums should not be machined to more than .030 oversize."

I have some NOS front J65 metallic brake shoes if you are looking for some.

It seems like the consensus is 3841177. I got the 3893560 number from a guy selling an entire original system (front & rears drums, backing plate/shoe assembly, front knuckles and lines) from a 67 camaro, Norwood, June 67 build. You can look at the system on eBay, it is still listed with pics. He is converting to a disc brake system, front and rear. I just bought 2 rears (cn 3841177) on eBay and I'll be using those. Thanks.. dan

I believe the "560" drums are service replacement parts which began in the early '70s.
