69 Front Brake Line Clips
« on: April 04, 2009, 12:10:41 AM »
I was just comparing the finish on some clips that I got from a suppiler vs the originals I took off my car. The original on the right look more like a transparent blue to me . Does anyone know what finsh was used on the originals?

Thanks CGR

The coating on the originals was more of a "dye" than paint, and the coloration varied widely; some of the reproductions appear to be "painted".

Exactly ----

I pulled my clips off of my pace car and they were so heavily coated in body shop undercoating gunk that when placed in a mild  (Solvent 140) tank the grime came off exposing the tranlucent Blue dye coloring..Nothing like the clips in the left side of the pictures above.
Ultimatly what I did was include the clips in my plating batch (Bright Zinc) and hung them from a wire and mist sprayed them with Dykem Blue layout Blue,,,they look very close to as found.

I did something similiar. I had them clear zinc plated then used DupliColor #T155 light blue metallic as thin as possible. They came pretty good.

The clip finishes vary.   From the iridescent-type blue to a robin's egg paint/color.

Repo vs. Orig.  Repos on the outer edges, the black split-clips are repainted orignals, the rest are untouched originals.

Some of the last junked up clamps I got from the Chi Neez resto places are powder coated blue. Kind of looks like the one pictured ? ( IMO powder coating should be reserved for lawnmowers... :P
I soaked them in MEK in a closed jar and removed the power coating. Underneeth the clamps appeared to have been made from galvanized sheet stock. Not bad looking. I used my modeling airbrush and dusted them with a light coat of over reduced Testors model paint I mixed up.
Blue layout ink is even better. And the airbrush is the bomb ! Try it.
OE clamps I have re plated in clear Cad and re dye as above.
