« on: June 08, 2009, 08:00:19 PM »
Does anybody know the proper points gap and dwell setting for a stock 69 Camaro 302 Engine using the 1111480 distributor?

The 1969 Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual states the point dwell setting should be 28-32 degrees (30 degrees preferred) for the 480 distributor.

Thanks Paul - does the manual state what the gap should be in order to achieve the recommended dwell setting?

.019" is the setting. The 30° or .019" is for most all of the single points distributors that I have worked on.

No, there is no specification for the point gap in the '69 Chassis Service Manual for V8 engines.

I do have a 1968 Sun Electric Corporation tune-up chart for the 302 and it states the point gap should be .019" for new points and .016" for used points.

Remember, if you have a dwell meter and can set the dwell at 30 degrees then the point gap is perfect, no matter what the specification is!    :)

Thanks Mike and Paul - I'm switching out my distributor to a rebuilt original 480 - just wanted to make sure I get it right...

Back in the 60's and 70s we used to set the dwell at 26 degrees to increase rpm before point bounce.

Set the dwell FIRST, then set the timing; dwell changes affect the timing.

Correct.  As the rubbing block wears against the distributor cam lobes, dwell increases and timing retards.
