Tach goes to 2000 when ignition is turned on
« on: May 26, 2009, 01:02:06 AM »
Put my wiring harness in and all is ok EXCEPT as stated above. In addition to the above in the subject line, my temperature gauge needle is gyrating at a high frequency when the key is turned on.

Any tips or a direction someone can point me in  so I can troubleshoot this would be great.

As always I appreciate the help.

we took the harness out of the car inspected it, inspected all grounds, inspected the fuse box. Found no issues.

We have been using a battery charger as our power supply. (12 amp setting) Today we will put a battery in the car and see if that makes any difference. I hope we were just under charging the system and as a result were getting the erratic results.

I will post the results.

Is it an after market programable Tach? If it is then you need to tell the Tach how many cylinders you have. The after market tachs are made to fit 4, 6 and 8 cylinders typically. If it reads 2,000 when the ignition is turned on it may be set for a 4 cylinder, but then again the readings would be completely off when the car is running.

I would check the ground to eliminate noise from for the temp guage. Do you hav ethe proper grounds inplace from the frame to body and body to block etc? Quick check it i with gatro clips to see if it helps and move the guage ground if it helps.

Cheers,
John

The tach is the original.

My problems were solved once we put the battery in and used it as the power supply instead of the battery charger.

I guess the battery charger did not have the cleanest DC power and the fact that it was just 12 amps could have effected the gauges.

I hope to get the car on the road today.

Thanks,
