1968 z28 stripes
« on: December 03, 2008, 04:45:04 PM »
I am getting ready to paint a 1968 Z28 from the LOS plant. My question is did the LOS cars have the stripes painted so that white overspray got down through the wiper cowl panel or were the cowls taken off the bodies and sprayed ? I have seem NOR cars that have the overspray on that area but not sure on the LOS cars.

Jerry explains this and has some pictures of painted LOS cowl panels in his '67-'68 Z/28 Fact Book.     :)

Do the stripes right.  Remember, that's the signature of the car and in my mind, you have to make them "right on the money".

Good luck and make sure you use that stencil kit.

I have looked at Jerrys book on how the LOS cars were painted around the cowl area. My question is how much care was taken at the factory to paint this area  as it would be seen even after the wiper cowl was installed? Was it painted as good as the rest of the body or was a light coat of stripe colour paint put over this area ? Thanks Paul

Also would this area be shiny or dull?

These cars were painted in lacquer; lacquer is not very 'shiny' before it's buffed....  If it isn't exterior surface sheet metal, then it wasn't buffed...

If you use basecoat/clearcoat, and put clear there, it will be shiny.......  but I have no idea how the cars are 'judged', since most/all of the restored cars seem to have base/clear on them....    Isn't the 'wrong' paint judged down??
