1969 standard steering wheel p/n
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:29:59 PM »
I'm headed to a swap meet later this week hoping to find a restorable standard black steering wheel for my Z/28. I'd like to know what part numbers or code numbers to look for on the back of the wheel. Thanks!

SH69Z28,

My 69Z came with the standard steering wheel.  My car build date is the 1st week of May (05A), built in Norwood.  My wheel has a "D" molded into the back side of the grip, at the 12:00 position.  I assume this is an April date code (hope others can confirm).

The part number molded into the back side of the inner hub is 9749408-12, and includes a logo of sorts as shown.  There where two different standard wheels used in 69; one with a smooth inset and one with grain.  Mine happens to be one with the grain as shown.

Good luck finding a wheel.

Thanks very much for the extensive reply. My car was built in LA with a first week of May date code though I have read elsewhere on this web site that a labor strike postponed most May assembly into June. This makes the first title registration date for the car in October more understandable.

Where was your car first registered? My 06A was also first registeded in October.

My car was first registered in Oregon and has been here its entire life. I fortunately bought the ownership/registration history from the DMV before it became off-limits due to privacy laws.
