67 CAMARO TRANSMISSION CODE OMITTED ON COWL TAG
« on: January 16, 2008, 08:44:16 PM »
CRG Members -

I have a '67 Camaro RS Convertible.  Group 2 on the cowl tag shows the alpha character, "G" and that's it.  The car does indeed have a console, but no transmission character.  The car originally came with a 327 and according to the second owner, a manual transmission.  My understanding is that a 67 with a 327 would have come with a Saginaw 3 or 4 spd, rather than the Muncie, however no code was stamped on the cowl tag.  Has anyone seen a cowl tag missing the trans code?  Does it mean something by virtue of the trans code being omitted?

The rest of the build plate matches the rest of the car, including the L in Group 3 for RS, the exterior and interior trim colors, top color, etc.

Incidentally, the speedo cable comes out the front near the brake booster and not near the gas pedal /tunnel as with a big-block car.  My understanding is the powerglide and Saginaw transmission shared the same speedo cable hole in '67.  My understanding is the same hole was cut in the floor regardless of floor-shift transmission type in '67 as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance-

Doug

Doug,
No trans code indicates it came with a 3 speed manual trans.

Originally, it was also a 3-speed manual car. Not common in a 396, but it was the standard transmission.

Could this not have been an early built TH400 car Kurt?

Pat,
Thanks!! That's what I get for not thinking!    ::)
Yes, it could have been a TH400 car.
A pic of the tag / the rest of the tag info would help tell us more.

I also have a 1967 “2G” car. It came with a console and a 3 speed manual transmission.

I believe Fisher Body trim tag option codes indicate changes that are different from a standard body build at the Fisher plant. The funny thing is there is not one single difference between a “2G” body and a non SS “2LG” body.
