Hood louvers on 68 SS
« on: October 06, 2007, 04:28:00 PM »
I was reading another post and it gave a link to a table on differences in the 68s.  In the table it listed the 350 SS as having the finned hood louvers and the BBs having the venturi type.  Was this across the board?  I had an SS in H.S. and it was in bad shape even then, so I can't say much about what it came with originally.  But, it did have things that made me realize it was an SS.  I couldn't tell at that time if it was a BB or SB car, but if I remember correctly it had a SB heater cover.  The reason I ask is because it had an SS hood, but it had the venturi type I guess.  Would that mean, if it was the original hood, it was a BB?

I believe the 67 SS hood had the finned hood and the 68 & 69 SS hood had the stacked hood.

That's what I thought, but the CRG chart shows 68s and SS 350s with the finned louver.

That chart needs to be updated. The SS 350 received the stacks at some point during the model year. Although I can't be positive, from the "original looking" cars I have in the database, it appears the changeover occurred sometime in early to mid November, 1967. However, since hoods are so easily changed, this may not be absolute.

Here's (partial) info from the old Q&A page that refers to the 68 model:

Q: [18-Dec-2002] Update: What SS hood ornament was used where and when?

A: For the 1968 model year, the chromed hood trim for SS396 changed from the simulated finned cooler to a set of simulated carburetor velocity stacks. The early 1968 model year SS350 continued to receive the 1967-style finned hood trim, but the SS350 trim transitioned to the velocity stack trim as the year progressed.

HERE'S THE LINK to the entire answer.

Thanks Ed.  Since getting my Z and being on here and TC, I've had a lot more interest in my old car.  I am getting some old pictures from my parents and am looking for any paper work to see if I can find a vin or something.  It was a real POS, but I fixed it up pretty good.  There were not a lot of parts for it back then and it had a lot of rust, so I sold it.  The reason I really want to kick myself is:  this data base and possibly knowing what happened to or where the engine is and it had a front-bench-bucket and fold-down rear seat.
