Engine weight comparison
« on: June 06, 2023, 02:57:25 PM »
I ran across this comparison of engine weights - complete engines less bellhousing, flywheel, and clutch. Think DZ vs L78 vs L89 vs ZL1. This is comparison of nominal weights - a L78 vs a LS6 vs a L88 are going to have some minimal weight differences.
All variances (in parentheses) are from the iron small block.

Small block, cast iron   -   520 pounds
Small block, iron w al head  - 480   (-40)
Small block, al head & block - 389  (-131)

Big block, cast iron   -       754  (+234)
Big block, iron w al head  - 660 (+140)
Big block, al head & block - 501 (-19)

Yes, it would. But I was really happy to find this data, I've never seen it before.

6 cylinder, better handling than a V8. Weight is centered. Lighter. So said R&T back in 67/8.

I have both 67 6 cylinder convertible and 67 327 V8 convertible…..6 cylinder car most definitely handles better (it actually is a surprisingly significant difference) both cars have same size front sway bar.

Some of the early 67 L6 cars didn't come with sway bars!

I thought all Convertibles had sway bars regardless of engine or build date? , my 6cyl convertible is April build date and it does have factory sway bar. My 67 327 is February build with exact same sway bar.

Back in the 90s, my Camaro club had an annual show. One contest besides the tricycle races was the engine block pull. We had a piece of plywood on the bottom of a 6 and it was a timed event. Definitely a hoot watching kids drag that thing.

Would like to know the actual weight of complete cars of a L78, vs. L78/L89. Just curious!
