Muncie Handle on Hurst

Haven't been on here in a while because I've been busy driving my car instead of talking about it for a change, finally.  But I did run into a small problem and that has gotten me to consider something that I didn't look into much before.  That is getting a Hurst shifter and mounting a Muncie handle on it.  The other day, (The one sunny, warm day we've had in 8 months) my repro Muncie shifter locked up.  Never had that happen so I didn't think about the Hurst.  Now I'm looking for options.

For one:  I'd like to get the Hurst without a handle as I plan on using the Muncie handle from mine.  Not only being a crappy Muncie linkage, it is also a repro so I don't care about trashing it.  I'll get an original someday to put on when it's a trailer queen, but for now I'd like to drive it.

Two:  There was a site I happened on that rebuilt and sold Hurst linkages.  They had an option for a classic Comp Plus that was silver cad rather than black oxide stating that up until 72 the original Hursts were the silver and then after that were the black.  I don't remember as that was a little before my driving days, but is that true?  I thought I would go that way as it would be a little more period correct and didn't cost anymore anyway.

Three:  Is there any more recent developments with someone selling or making a Hurst CP with a Muncie handle for our cars.  I tried to check on TC but I haven't been on there in so long I can't log in or even search.

I don't know of any of the old silver cad, almost every old hurst unit ive come across is black, but then I'm still young and "old" units I was looking at were probably from the 80's. I know hurst doesn't offer just a "brain" minus the handle, I looked as well for my 68, ended up just buying the whole thing and saving the old handle for another car. I don't know of anyone selling a hurst with a Muncie stamped handle currently.

I did a bunch of them where I cut off the original Muncie chrome stick and I cut it and drill it and bend to match the Hurst 4106 stick . The 4106 is the correct Hurst stick for 67 68 Camaro.

I have not been doing them lately because they got expensive to do.

If you buy an original Muncie shifter even in rough shape is about $50 (or more) , then do the machine work (about 1 hr) , then new chrome $50 to $100 , Will be at least $150 to do one with new chrome. With used good chrome can maybe do it for $100 but a used Muncie shifter with good chrome will cost more.

This is the place I found.  I'm not promoting it.  Has anyone heard of or dealt with them?  I am going to contact them to see about getting one without the handle.  They seem to be competitive with Summit unless someone knows of a better deal for the Hurst CP.  I have a Muncie repro which has already locked up so I will use the handle off of it.

Camaroboy do you still have the spare stick and is it the 4106?  I would just like to use it as a template to cut and drill my Muncie when I get around to it.

Not a problem as I plan on putting the Muncie stick on it.  BTW does anyone know why the mounting bracket uses the u bolts and a plate that goes under the tranny rather than the plate that bolts to the tailshaft holes?

the 5284 mount plate  is the large flat plate design that Hurst used on many floor shift conversion kits 3sp and 4sp where the trans does not have the threaded holes to bolt on a small mount plate

They designed it to fit the new 1967 Camaro with Muncie or Saginaw trans and fit console and non console cars.

It is also used on some Novas.  It works OK so they never changed it to the small mount plate design like the 69 Camaro and others use.

some don't like the 5284 because it changes the drive shaft pinion angle slightly

On my 67 Camaro , I made an aluminum plate like was used on early Chevelle Hurst kits. I made it to match the shifter location of the 5284 mount plate but bolts on to the trans

Joe did you have any dimensions to cut by or just go with the other stick?  I don't have one to compare to.

My handle is ready for the plater, I thought I might include a pic to show how close it looks to JoeC's handle. I matched the Hurst stick up to the Muncie stick (they are really close in geometry), cut it, marked the holes and checked with the mounting plate for fit, and drilled them.

For mounting the shifter I used the steel bolt-on small Hurst plate, linkage is standard Muncie Hurst, fits the hole precisely with no cutting or clearance issues. I'm entirely pleased with how it goes together -

What really pisses me off is I have one of those somewhere and a linkage for a 75 Firebird that people want to buy and it went into some black hole somewhere and I cant find it.

Well it happens to all of us. I just had a set of keys that appeared out of no where. Eventually they come back (or out of ) the black hole, but time has no meaning, so no telling how long it could take.
* Usually if I clean my garage top to bottom, everything magically appears...

I usually find what I'm looking for right AFTER I buy a replacement.

I found a three speed Muncie (GM) handle on a 3 speed shifter body, probably swapped, vs blank, anyway Swap meet find.
Grinding wheel cut, Parted, Layout and Drill/Mill Hurst Comp mounting holes.  Slight Big Vise and tweak to get the similar bend.
Chrome cracked as expected. Should Fool most whom look inside the car.
