Trim rings for 14x6 XG Rally
« on: April 08, 2020, 11:00:52 PM »
I’ve read everything I could find and can’t determine the correct trim ring part number for 69 XG 14x6 rally wheels. Some say it’s 9796919 and I’ve heard 475019. Car is 69 convertible with 350cu and rally wheel option specified (XJ7)

Any help would be great.

Originally the part number was 3923522, which was then superseded by part number 3934892, which was then changed to part number 9796919 in the 1970's, which was then superseded by part number 475019 in the 1980's!

Thanks Ed. I guess I’ll search for all of them and hope I find a nice set.

As I search on eBay for those part numbers, some show the valve stem closed and some open. Which is correct for a 350cuin / 250 hp engine?

Well, there ARE minor differences. The 1st version (3923522) had a "notch" for the valve stem and the 2nd design (3934892) had a "hole".  I believe all 69's had the "hole", but I'm not positive about that. Early cars may have had the 1st version with the "notch".

Anyone with ORIGINAL 1969 rally wheel trim rings on their car care to post what they have? We need to start another list!

Thanks Ed, I’d love to see pictures of originals on 14x6 wheels. My car is an April car.

Hmm, the service NOS ones I used for my 14x6 are 475020, not 019.  I still have one ring unopened, 475020 gr 5.871 ring asm.  Definitely has the oval hole and stepped edge which is correct for 69. The 475020 has the "points" for mounting (which scratch up the inside of rim pretty good, but they stay on well!) they are 2 1/4" deep when measured vertically on a flat surface, just like the originals.  They sit proper on the wheel without a lot of space between ring and wheel.

The notched versions measure less than 2 1/4" deep.

Here is an original 4 clip one

Here are the NOS 475020 rings mounted, sorry, could not find a closeup pic.

The 475020 rings were originally used on late 70's 14x7 wheels.

Ed, that wouldn't surprise me :)  But when you put a 2 1/4" ring on a 14x7 rim, there is a pretty large gap on the inside edge.  When I bought the 475020 back in the 80s and 90s, I compared them to the 69 original 4 clip rings and they are a perfect match. I have XN rims.

For the 69 14x7 SS rally, the NOS service rings I have are 22519452, which is 2 3/4" deep oval hole, but with a different edge treatment.  The 14x7 rings on a 14x6 rim hit on the inside edge.

LOL! I'm not surprised either.

The 22519452 rings are late 70's - early 80's Oldsmobile rings! Just goes to show you GM had way too many part numbers for the same basic thing.

If you look in the parts manuals, there are probably 15 different rings listed. And that's just for Chevrolet! There are probably another 15 for Pontiac, Olds, Buick, etc... And, as you discovered with the 475020 rings, even though it's "officially" for a 14x7, it fits a 14x6, so what the heck were they thinking????

Thanks guys. I just bought 2 of the 475020 NOS from eBay. I also bought a set of 4 that looked very similar from another eBay seller. He said they were from the 90’s and have the clips. They were fairly inexpensive so I thought I’d pick them up. The only difference between the two from the pictures are the hooks on the clips. The 475020 clips have angled hooks and the others look rectangular.

I’ll post pics when I get them. I’ll keep my eyes open for 2 other 475020’s that aren’t priced too high.
