'67-'69 Trunk Lid to Hinge Shims
« on: April 20, 2021, 02:04:27 PM »
Did the factory ever use shims between the Trunk Lid and Hinges on '67-69 Camaros?

Thanks!

Yes, they did, here is an example from an original 1969 L78 Norwood built Camaro SS. Shims were installed after paint and required the hinge bolts to be loosed so the bolt(s) will show tool marks.

Interesting edge shape on the shim, Lloyd.
Any pictures of what the actual shim looks like?

I'm curious why a shim wouldn't be painted. I would assume the deck lid would have been fitted and shimmed (if needed) before paint at Fisher.

My 12A norwood 69 had shims which were lost after disassembly. We had to shim it when we put it back together after paint. Used regular body shims.

Since Fisher Body installed & fit Decklid pre-paint, it's likely that those delivered with unpainted shims were flagged during Final Assembly as having fit issues where shims were added (quick fix).

Has anyone ever noted a 67 or 68 survivor with shims or of the few found were they all 69's? I've looked at a fair amount of survivors and never saw that but we learn all the time..... Thanks for sharing.....

Prior to painting the deck lid heights can be altered by using a block and pulling the deck lid down to alter the hinge orientation, after painting you would have to use shims to keep from cracking or marring the paint.

I have “tweaked” deck lids by hand using a 2x4 wrapped with carpet and duct tape before. :)
