1967 manual steering box i.d.

Looking for the casting number and general photos of a 67 manual steering box. I realize they are different from 68,69. It appears they have a casting date but no stamped assembly date like the later ones. Also the part number is cast on the bottom side . Does anyone have an original one I could see a few photos ? Thanks

 I have one in the shed I will get. The assembly date is stamped into a flat pad on the top.

Thinking there might be two styles of manual steering boxes used in 67. Both Saginaw . The 68 style with the casting number on top of the box and build date stamped on the machined pad. Then the other style with the casting number on the bottom of the box and no assembly stamped date. Would like to see some photos of original cars . The top caps are way different also. Both cast iron . Aluminum caps were used in 69 and newer.

Here is a 67 manual steering box taken form a 67 Camaro parts car back in the early 80's.
The assembly date stamped on the pad is A2846 (Tuesday Oct 11, 1966 A=fist shift?). The casting is 5679142 and date is 258 (Sept 15, 1966)
There are no markings on the bottom.
My 67 NOR has the same manual box as shown in the pictures.
Do you need side views or just the casting info?

Wow I am surprised at those photos . They used two different style manual steering boxes in 67 . Both Saginaw units. That style in the photo is the same as a 68. I thought maybe it got phased in late in 67 . Have photos of survivor May and June cars with the other style box. But those are LA built cars. Maybe its a LA thing?

The main manual gearbox used on Camaros was casting number 5679142 with 3 mounting ears. An alternate box 5696084 with 4 mounting ears was sometimes used.

The build date of the car is 05a . The steering box that is on the car is the 5679142 box. The casting date on the box is 299.Which is the end of Oct. Cleaned off the pad were the assembly date is stamped and much to my surprise its blank. The pad was never stamped. So with the early casting date i am thinking its not the original steering box . Also when the car was detailed under the hood in the 80s it was removed and painted black. The car has low miles and was never restored . Found another car built at the same plant (LA) 65 vin numbers away from my car . That car is totally untouched . It has the 5696084 casting number other style steering box installed on it . Also found a few other cars built around the same time with the 5696084 box. So the question is should i find another dated box or use the early one that was on the car ? Has anyone seen a steering box dated six months before the car was built ? with no assembly date stamped in it ? I never did . Thanks

 I checked the manual box on the 05B NOR and it is stamped B0117. Almost 4 months prior. I wonder how many they built in batches for such a spread.

Good info Mike . Could you check the steering box on your other Los camaro ? Also another thing i found out the other  5696084 steering box doesnt have a stamped assembly date . All it has is a casting date.

Hi John,

  The LOS is a 04B (NCRS report lists April 18, 1967) and has power steering. The top of that cover (aluminum) is stamped 032 7  Looks like Feb. 1, 1967

Here are a few more photos.
I purchased the 5679142 manual box assembled B1527 for my 06E NOR car.
The second photo shows the 5679142 manual box on a survivor 03C NOR car with what appears to be a casting date of 6 and assembly date of B49_.
Note the difference in the lids. The box assembled on B1527 has an abbreviated casting number and includes a casting date.
At some point in this time period it appears that the lids changed.


The 3rd photo shows, what I believe to be, the original box in my 01D LOS car. It's the 5696084 box with 4 mounting ears.

my 05E car has the 084 box with the 4 ears. i have no reason to believe it was ever changed
