1114356 Starter Solenoid

I've been searching for details of the original fasteners and plating used for the cable/wiring connections on the 1114365 ("356) starter solenoid (used on the 1969 Z/28 and other applications). NOS versions of the 356 vary (copper vs zinc plating, slotted screws vs bolts etc). The Bakelite cap used in 1969 was black with the embossed Delco Remy logo in the center. Below are photos of the restored solenoid from Chick's (68camaroz28) 1968 Z/28 and an NOS service replacement. If anyone has an original (1969) 356 solenoid please post photos.

Lloyd knows I checked my file of Skip's 69 survivor and do not have a picture of that needed area. Possibly in the near future (spring) Skip and I can take a look see with picture/s.

Thanks Chick, I reviewed the many hundreds of photos I took during Vintage Certification over the years and I don't have a single photo of the back of an original starter solenoid. Plenty of photos of starters but not the angle or details that I'm looking for.

I received a good photo from Mike T (rszmjt) of the 356 solenoid from his 1969 RS/Z that he's owned since 1974. Mike believes the solenoid is original to the car - at least it hasn't been replaced during his 47 year ownership. Although the plating / finishes are dissolved (sacrificed) on the fasteners (not the terminal posts), it does show use of slotted head screws and nuts with separate washers, consistent with the photos of the NOS solenoid.

 If I remember correctly, the assembly line solenoid P/N was 1114362 up to '69? Here is one I pulled out of a box in my shed that I took off a 67 small block parts car back in the 80's. Interesting enough are the two brass upper nuts. One for the battery and one on post S. The remainder of the nuts and screws look to be bright zinc plated.

Thanks for posting Mike, is it possible the "2 brass upper nuts" are copper plated rather than brass? Its possible of course they are brass fasteners yet the period examples we've seen so far include some copper plated fasteners. I have a few more photos to post of period solenoids and the fasteners on some of these have taken on a brass-like appearance due to mild oxidation however they are copper plated.

More examples of period 356 solenoids. Some originals have letter markings molded in the cap while others have the Delco Remy center emblem clocked 180 degrees.

  I had thought along those line too. When I remove the nuts the threads definitely have a shiny brass appearance with no traces of copper. I'm soaking them now in Mr. Clean to  get the grime off it and will see how the surfaces look.
