68 Z28 Console alignment
« on: August 06, 2020, 11:28:04 PM »
I am having a heck of a time getting my 4spd Hurst shift stick to fit the console. I have replaced the Hurst Comp+ shifter (3914339 ) and a new install kit (3734529) and have the stock HURST stick (I measured the stick and it fits the 4106 but has no 4106 stamping) but the console, when fastened, restricts the stick from going into 3 and 4. If I loosen the console the stick pushes it over about 1" to get to 3 or 4. I checked the mounting holes on the tunnel and they look to be original. Any ideas?

Welcome aboard. I don't know the numbers like some of the guys. I will say the first year a Hurst shifter was used in a Camaro was 1969. 1967/1968 had Muncie shifters...Joe

Check the stick with the drawing in the Hurst catalog, if it's a match? All the other numbers are good. Assuming everything else is factory correct there should be no clearance problems e.g. no scatter shield and block plate. I had to move my console back for a different reason than yours(installed aftermarket trans.) It wasn't/isn't cosmetic but it works.

Ideally you need the shifter handle to be centered pretty much dead center in the shifter hole. I used the Competition Plus console shifter, but not the wrap around mounting bracket 3734529 (which was in this Z when I bought it), along with a 661 fine splined '70 model Muncie close ratio 4 spd and a Lakewood blow proof bellhousing. It had the same problem of interference on the 3-4 side, the whole mess was dealt with by scrapping the shifter mount, changing back to a '68 660 cased close ratio Muncie (car was equipped that way to start), 403 bellhousing, and using a Hurst 1957773 mount as pictured, which approximates the '69 shifter mount dimensionally. Using a salvaged Muncie handle carefully cut to position in the same location as the original Muncie shifter, you can see the front-to-back and side-to-side position of the Hurst and the handle, which is in neutral in these pics (uncut original console-equipped floor, documented Z). Add your boot, console and appropriate handle, and it takes a more than close look to see if it's live, or Memorex. If you don't remember the old ads, whether it's a Muncie or Hurst rowing stick.

By the way, the handle location is slightly canted to allow for shifting into reverse. Hurst thought of that - I didn't have to. Also, you can usually find these mounts at a good price on eBay. I think the 3734529 mount places the shifter a little low in the tunnel, maybe causing the handle to rub too far right. Just my opinion - it works for me.

Regards,
Steve

Pic of the modified Muncie shifter handle (original Muncie handle patterned to fit the Comp Plus Hurst offset mounting bracket) prior to chroming. Purists, don't fret - the handle I used was already modified to fit a non-console Hurst shifter, bent and welded on. Fortunately, the length and Muncie script portion of the handle was intact, and fit right into the envelope it was supposed to fill. Chrome shop did a great job with restoring the plating for a very reasonable price.

Steve

Hi, something else that could also effect the shifter and it may be a long shot if everything is where it's suppose to be and still hitting. Try measuring the sub-frame or check the bushings in the sub-frame. It wouldn't take much to make the shifetr hit on 1 side . Good luck . Emo
