Ignition Coil ID
« on: February 06, 2020, 10:42:53 PM »
I have a coil that is on a 68 Firebird 400. Since it's a Delco-Remy I was hoping it would apply to most GM vehicles.

The numbers embossed on it are:
410
8-R

Does anyone know if this is original for this car? How does one decode this?

The number embossed on the coil canister is the last 3 digits of the coil assembly number, which includes the coil bracket. Chevy coil assy numbers usually begin with 1115 so I searched for '1115410' and pulled up this:
https://firstgenfirebird.org/firebird/1969/ama/ama_page5.html
Suggests it was used on 1st Gen Pontiac Firebird 350 and 400 cu in engines.
The second line on the coil can is B-R which is believed to stand for 'Ballast Resistor'. Delco-Remy coils for Camaros changed over around 1968 from 'BR' to 'B-R' so if the same applies for Pontiacs, that narrows down the usage timeframe on yours.
No expert (on any front) but may be original to car?
