Repro vs. NOS spiral shock tube
« on: September 23, 2018, 12:01:45 AM »
I know some folks look for the correct numeric fonts to stamp a Julian date into a reproduction spiral shock, but I figure what's the point if you can easily spot a repro. Here is a picture of a reproduction Hugger Performance spiral shock next to a NOS (late 67 date) spiral shock to show the difference. As you can see, the NOS spiral in the tube is much wider and deeper compared to the reproduction.  That should make it easy to spot a real or a repro.

Mike is there a lip around the bottom of the upper tube on the NOS shock? Seems to be a faint line there.

Not all of the repros have the narrow shallow groove. The ones at Tamraz & Parts Place look closer.
According to their ads, Tamraz shocks are made in Taiwan & Parts Place shocks are made in the USA...Joe

No lip. It must be the way the light is reflecting off the shock.

Maybe this would be a good comparison thread then of the different vendors. I thought Hugger Performance was the sole supplier.
We have Hugger Performance shocks pictured.
Anyone wish to take a picture of their repro shock to post for comparison?
You don't have to remove it from the car...just a closeup of the tube is good and who it was purchased from.

The guy who supplies the corvette shocks and other spirals uses NOS unstamped spirals and stamps the dates and the part numbers.

The Tamraz shocks look more like the NOS ones I have.
When I start on my other 67 resto I will look at these.

I know this was an little older post but wanted to give some insight.  The original & NOS spirals (rears) have a very small and slight "bell" shape to the lower portion of the upper section of the shock.  Here are a couple photos that will hopefully show that.  It is very subtle but is present.

I looked again at the NOS and unless I shine a light from the bottom up to look at shadows, the bell is very faint.
It is hard to feel it though.
