Carburator replacement
« on: August 14, 2018, 12:04:11 PM »
Hi,
I have a 1967 Camaro RS/SS with the original 350/295 engine (L48). Unfortunately the original carburator (Rochester 4MV) is not working propperly. I had it at service but that did not help either. So I am looking for a new replacement.
Can someone give me a recommendation what fits best to my stock engine? There are so many diffenent types on the market and I am not an expert...    And I guess I will also need some extra parts to connect the fuel line and the throttle control.
If possible I want to do minimum modification.
Thanks, Guenther

Get an old Holley list-6210. Rebuild, install, go, hang on! I would prefer to repair the Rochester, if it were my car? The Rochester carb is very good and up to even high performance & racing tasks.

I agree with Bentley....    Have someone knowledgable about Quadrajets redo your carburetor; one problem the typical mechanic might not address is loose/wore throttle shaft which needs bushings installed.  Most of the carburetor restorers DO THAT when they restore a quadrajet.   When working correctly, the quadrajet is a very good carburetor, for both mileage and performance!

I am a huge Holley fan but the Qjet is really hard to beat. Yours being a 60,s model makes it all the better. There are people that can repair or restore them. Look for the guys who actually test them on their "mule engine". My cars that came with them still run with them.

Guys, Guenther is from Austria so it may be difficult for him to find someone that can repair/restore his Rochester. However, I agree with everyone that IF POSSIBLE, use the original carburetor. If not, then the HOLLEY 6210 has been around forever and is a direct replacement for all 1960's and early 1970's Q-Jets. I run this same carb on my 1957 327 engine and have even run it on a 396 in the past. It's a GREAT carburetor and all the linkages and lines bolt up with no modifications required.

Many thanks for all the responses!! I had the Q-Jet at a local service guy here in Austria but as mentioned it seems not working correctly so I will look for the Holley 6201.
If I understand you right Ed I do not have to modify the fuel line and the throttle control rod.
Thanks, Guenther

That's correct Guenther. The 6210 is a direct replacement for the Q-Jet, so no modifications are required.

Send it to Lars Grimsrud.  He is THE Q-jet man.

I had one of those Holley (quadrajet replacement) carbs on my '69 Corvette for awhile, but finally rebuilt and installed the original quadrajet.  One problem with the Holley on my corvette was that the air cleaner didn't sit down correctly over the carb due to an interference.   This was on a 350/350 L46 engine.   The Holley DID run very well on the engine - I'm a Holley fan for a long time, but when the Quadrajet was rebuilt correctly I became more of a Quadrajet fan.

Note:  Stingr69 is correct; Lars Grimrud IS the man re quaradjets.  I have some papers he's written on them which helps one understand the Quadrajet much better..  :)

I have seen factory air cleaners dented for the fuel bowls, float adjusters, ect to make a Holley fit. My corvette that came with a 600 Holley was dented pretty could to fit a 780.

Now that's interesting. I don't remember having to ever modify my air cleaners. But then again, I don't remember if I used ORIGINAL air cleaners or not!

If you need to dent the air cleaner, it would be better to buy a small spacer like THIS ONE ON EBAY. (They make various sizes, so you should be able to find one that works.) NEVER destroy an original part!!!

The air cleaner base in a Corvette wraps DOWN around the carburetor more than for other cars due to the lower hood; I always thought that was why the air cleaner designed for a quadrajet had interference with the Holley spreadbore carb that I had in my car...  It might not be a problem with the air cleaner from a 350/295 hp engine in a Camaro...?  but I'd check before I installed the carb!!  :)

Well, you guys got me curious so I started looking through pictures of my car when I first got it home. At that time it had a 6210 on it with the original air cleaner (see pictures attached). As you can see, the engine is filthy (as was the entire engine compartment!), but there aren't any (extra) dents in the air cleaner base for carb clearance. Of course, I can't say the 6210 will work with EVERY air cleaner out there, but I would say that since Holley advertises this carb as a " direct “bolt on” replacement", it should. However, read the INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS!! There are a few notes regarding "reforming" the fuel line and spacers for air cleaners!!

Gary, the air cleaner base on my 69 Corvette L36 and the base on my 68 Camaro L89 are a bit different in where the factory indentations are, but the "drop" on both is the same. It appears that any car with an open element air cleaner uses the same basic "drop".

And yes, I agree. Lars is THE MAN when it comes to Q-Jets AND distributors. I had him restore the original Q-Jet and TI distributor on my 69 Corvette L36 and they both run FANTASTIC!!!
