1968 z/28 water pump pulley reinforcement plate?
« on: February 17, 2008, 11:31:37 PM »
Does a 1968 z/28 use the reinforcement plate between the upper pulley and the water pump flange? most other v8s use these up to 1968 but not sure on the z?     Thanks John

There's not one on my '68 Z/28 either, then again the original coolant pump has been replaced.     ???

My 68 LA z28 did not have one either. I did put one on after I ripped the centre out of my pulley. GM still sells them up here 7bucks each

I can't remember seeing a spacer under the pulley on any water pump I have replaced.   This is all makes not just Chevrolets.     I have worked 35 years full time and then part time as an ASE certified tech.   If you're ripping the centers out of pulleys, something's wrong.    ???

Interesting - if you look at the "non-illustrated parts" sheet for Z28 in the 1968 assembly manual, it shows that the fan and drive assembles the same as K02. If you look in the K02 section (sheet A1), it shows the "production reinforcement" between the water pump hub and the back side of the water pump pulley. Then if you go to UPC 6, sheet A7, which shows the "production" V-8 pulleys, there's no mention of any reinforcement, and the nomenclature shows just "pulley", not "pulley asm", which would be the case if the pulley had a reinforcement welded to it.

Corvettes of the era had the reinforcement spot-welded to the back side of the pulley, and there was a TSB to add it to cars that didn't have it.

I know this thread is kind of old, but I just saw that piece in the Paragon site.  Not that we need it

Just adding to this topic as I'm researching the same thing. I followed the info. in previous posts, and as far as I can tell from reading through the AIM for 68 it looks like the reinforcement plate is noted for clutch fans (K05 sheet A1). But for the regular 4 bladed fan, which is what I'm using for my 350 ci, 295 hp motor, it doesn't look like the plate is called for (6 sheet A7). Can anyone verify that one way or the other if regular V8 motors used that plate as well?
Looking at the 67 AIM (6 sheet A4) it calls for the reinforcement plate for the V8, but I don't see it for 68. Thanks for any input.

Sorry if I wasn't supposed to revive an old thread, just thought since it was the relevant topic keeping one search string would be good. Thanks
