68 Camaro Engine?
« on: November 08, 2006, 04:59:29 PM »
I bought a 1968 Camaro Convertible Vin #124678N460801 and the only numbers I can find on the engine are 43 GM  14816379  and V0709800.  I want to know all that I can about the car and if the engine is the original one from the car (matching numbers?).  I also want to know what engine it is (350 small block? HP? Etc.)  If anyone has any of this information or have any suggestions on how I can find it myself I would be much obliged.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can give me in this matter.

I think you'll find that the block casting number is 14316379 (not 14816379); that block was used in trucks from '69-'85, and in various passenger cars from '78-'81. Re-check the pad stamp to see if it's really V0709800 - the last three digits should be letters, not numbers. The block should also have a raised cast-in date code on the rear flange about six inches toward the passenger side from the distributor. In any event, it's a 350 block, but is not original to the car.

Did you ever get this figured out? I have a 350 with the same casting number and pad stamp. I can't find anything!

Although there's not a lot of information on these, from what I can find, it points to being a GM Target Master "over the counter" crate engine. The last 4 digits (in your case 9800) are the last 4 digits of the GM part number for that particular engine. Another example, VF292800, is another "over the counter" crate engine with "2800" being the last 4 digits of the GM part number for that particular engine. Another example of a Targetmaster engine (p/n 14009800) built in 1985 could have a code stamped as A0198005 (A = January, 01, 9800 = P/N and 5 = 1985).

A lot of these were made in Mexico so it may have "Hencho en Mexico" cast into it somewhere.

Well we know for sure that these are not “68 Camaro engines”.  Still would like to see the stamped pad.
