68 and 69 Console Gauge Pod Trim
« on: December 10, 2017, 02:12:25 AM »
Over the past few months I've seen several different console sawtooth gauge pods with silver trim around the edges. A member here (daven1256) showed pictures of his gauge pod after restoration, with the silver edge trim applied - I think that was the first time I'd noted this detail, and have since spotted several others. My (believed) original gauge pod has no remnants of silver at all, so I'm wondering..... could it just have worn off, or was this a 68 only detail, or was there some other subtle difference, such as only custom interiors with gauges got silver accents, or maybe even different suppliers??

Hey Tim. That's the first time I've seen the "saw tooth" description. What is that referring to? The only thing I can think of is the corners on each of the four gauges. Here's a pic of mine before I cleaned it up if it's what you're looking for. It does have remnants of silver.

"Saw Tooth" refers to the side profile being shaped like saw teeth. It's an old term, still applies.

Tim, all original 1968 and 1969 U17 housings had the heat stamped chrome edges, but service replacements didn't. Or at least they didn't by the mid 1970's because I remember getting a service replacement for one of my cars back in the mid 1970's and complaining to the guy behind the counter that it didn't have the heat stamp. His answer was that it was a service replacement and wouldn't necessarily look the same, but would fit.

Also, I know for sure that for a long time, the reproducation housings didn't have the heat stamp chrome.

OK thanks Ed. Gauge cover is definitely not a reproduction, but I will have to check it again closely for any hint of silver around the edges. Might have missed it during initial look.....
Dave, I was going to post the link to daven1256's thread with pictures showing the silver edge, but the pictures are gone thanks to photobucket.....

Got it. I see it now. Thanks.

Photobucket is the best! ;-) Lots and lots of priceless reference pics are now gone thanks to those scumbags.

Looked at an original 69 cluster today. Definitely signs of the silver.
