This 67 Trim Tag Look Real?
« on: July 07, 2017, 04:27:05 AM »
Hello CRG!

Have been reading the site for a while, but this is my first post. I'm in the market for a 1st gen, and am looking at a 1967 SS/RS 396. Original block and trans have been replaced, so can't match up the numbers on either.

I have a picture of the trim tag (attached). All the info on it matches the features and colors on the car (with exception of transmission, I was told the car was originally a heavy duty 3 speed manual and was switched to Turbo 400 at some point. Tag suggests it was indeed standard M13 manual). Looking up the VIN in the build date table roughly matches to 03D stamp (VIN table suggests April 67). I've also recently learned that the tiny hole on the trim tag below the 4N option code is something that is a known issue / item with trim tags from around March/April 1967. So a lot of the signs look good that tag is real, but couple of concerns 1) the numbers are all really crisp for a 50 year old tag (though I have seen some authentic ones in which that's the case, and the car is in really nice shape overall), and 2) rivets look like tag has been off the car at some point.

I have an offer on the car, but can only hold it for so long. Appreciate any guidance as to whether tag look legit from as esteemed an expert group as this one!

Thanks,

HAMBO

Trans could be either auto or manual, no way to tell via the tag.

Only way it could have come with a TH400 is is if it was a 325 hp in '67.

Thanks for the info. Yes, it's a 67 325.

The tag doesn't have the 2Z option code listed on it, which I thought was for the TH400. Even without that, it still could have come with a TH400 from the factory?

Thanks

How can you tell the rivets have been off the car? If the seam sealer was changed that doesn't mean it was off.
The tag looks fine for that period. The numbers crispness shouldn't be much of a concern. The tags were usually out of the way enough from physical damage.
Another tell tale sign would be a kick-down plug in the wire harness if it came with a TH400.

Kurt had stated that it could of been auto or manual....Just so I am understanding this right....A 4N car could of come with a three on the tree? That's the only way it could have a manual with this trim tag.

On the surface maybe.

No, 3 speed on the floor.  Most have 2B, but I see a couple don't.

Kurt, Was there a cut off date for a 2B (floor shift) or was it a later in the year change to the trim tag?

Looks like the first few months didn't use 2B, then it was used for the rest of the production year.
