Presumably the factory stamp was intended to be 0828, 0830 or 0831.

Yup, it's a known stamping error.  A quote from Bill in another thread...

"I have 4 V0838DZ engines in my db. Best guess, it was supposed to be V0831DZ, a Saturday. V0828DZ is known."
