69 Big Block Steering Hose
« on: February 28, 2016, 01:11:22 AM »
Directly related to this post in the 'Restoration' topic section, http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=14296.0
I was contacted by a member, here, to measure my steering hoses off of the 396 car. I have good reason to believe all these pictured  components are original assembly line pieces. Here are what I measured:
Return line (non-pressure) Length-26.75 in., OD-.700 in. +-,ID-.400 in.
Sleeve Length- 6.25 in., OD- 1.165 in. basically the ID is the same as the hose OD, so I did not measure.
The pressure hose has a yellow? (perhaps white originally) stripe running thr length of the hose with a GM part number that I cannot read or photo well. There are no stamping s on any of the metal parts, including the tightening nuts. Hope this helps someone.

Thank you Bentley! It's the info I was looking for!

I am currently trying to get some accurate replacements made, as I feel there may be a need for them. I do know that places sell some so I was looking to get them better and cheaper than current ones available. My goal is a better fitment and look. I do need a couple of people as testers. So If you I can get 2-4 people that can test fit and report back I will send you some for free. I will need some things though.

1) to get it done within a week of receiving them
2) opinion on how it looks compared to what you are using now or original
3) type of hose you are using ie: original or replacements
4) what length should they come?
5) don't be mad if doesn't work (it's free)

If this works for you, Post up if interested then send me an email

I'll add, the pressure hose OD is .100 in. larger than my suction hose. This pressure hose measures at .800 +/- .015

Test fit - probably not within a week.
But I can compare them to the originals on the car.

It would be my honor to have you guys check them out! Would 2 pieces 12 inches be good? I guess a week was unrealistic.

Kurt, Send me your shipping address.

I'm happy to report back that Scott (Spooky) set me up with a couple lengths of his replacement steering hose sleeves. They turned out excellent. They're a bear to get on, but that just means they are nice and tight and factory looking. I went with 6 1/2" based on what Bentley posted (6 1/4") figuring the factory foam would have probably shrunk after 46 years. I wouldn't use power steering hoses without these covers. I think they'd end up getting chaffed in the subframe bracket. Here's a couple of pics. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hawk, glad you like them. I think they were used in all models, BB, SB and 6 cyls, due to them all going under frame mount. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Good job Spooky & Bentley!

In the future, I think I am going to be "test fitting" some tail pipes from Bentley....hahahha

Hey Bentley you just scored on the hoses. I hope your motor is on the engine stand and detailed at this point?

I know Larry (X33RS) can paint your car, how about a road trip this spring?

I was also lucky enough to have 2 sleeves sent to me. The fit and quality is excellent! I have tried the other sleeves available and they do not compare to these. As Hawk said, I would not install p/s hoses without these sleeves. If you are looking for the most accurate sleeves available these are by far the ones IMO. Thank you Scott for going the extra mile to get these done. I will post pics on Camaros.net as I still can't reduce to fit here.

Doc.

Not 6 cylinders from my experience. The hoses did not go under the engine frame mount. I have a pic somewhere.

Scott, thank you so much for all you do for the hobby. Thank you for the sleeves. They really fit well and I do believe these are accurate replicas of what was installed. Thought I was going to have to make do with oil soaked sleeves until I received these! Look great and thanks one more time.

glad you guys like them. The company I had make them up did a great job and from the way you guys say they fit, I'm happy.  I know there not be a huge call from the general public. I will try to make these available to some of us "overly anal about our cars" people. I just would like it to be a fair deal.

What kind of $ value would you all put on them? Just looking for some direction on if it would be worth it to make them available.
I am not trying to sell these here. Just info.
