67 SS/RS grill emblems?
« on: February 10, 2016, 11:51:57 PM »
Which emblems are correct for the grill of a 1967 SS/RS with the SS350 option?  The SS350 or the SS emblem?

I think it depends if the car is early enough before the 396 came out.

The build date was third week of December, 1966.   When was the 396 build started?

So was it SS grill emblems, then after the 396 came out they put SS350 emblems on the grill?  Would this carry over to the gas cap and horn button also?

thanks,   --joe

I found the below post after a better, refined search.  Is this what you guys remember?

The 67 SS Grille emblem started life with "350" below the SS.  In mid 67 when the SS396 was released, the "350" was removed from the emblem leaving only SS.  In so doing, the bottom of the mid-year 67 SS emblem was flat, not cut out between the SS as the one shown.  I have included a photo showing the two different versions with the second version on top (note flat bottom) and the original below.

The 67 assembly manual in the L48 section shows the original emblem number as 3893844 replaced by 3916610.  No grille emblem number is specified under any of the 396 sections.  The service part numbers in the 67 parts manual are 3907916 for 350 and 3918871 for 396.  Interesting it is noted as different for the two engines instead of early and late.  The 68 parts manual lists only the second number for use on 67 Camaros.  For 68 models the part number changed to 3919194.  The service part number included the backing plate causing the difference in service and assembly line numbers.

I found no six digit part number listing for a Camaro grille emblem (Group 1.303) in any of my parts manuals.  I did find an Ebay listing for a part number 331707 claiming it to be a 69 grille emblem.  The number in the parts book for the two 60 emblems is not that number.

Doug is right in that after the 396 was introduced in Nov 1966, the bottom 350 was removed at some point and the emblem is flat. The 67 AIM L48/A4 shows the emblem as P/N 3916610 and the revision note dated 3-3-67 next to it showed it was 3893844. That revision date doesn't necessarily mean that is when the change went into effect.  AIM L34/A2 dated 3-28-67 mentions the sheet metal ornamentation is the same as L48.
My thinking is during the transition period the 350 version was used for the SS 350 until stock was depleted while the new one superseding that was used on the 396 and then the common was used for both.

So to continue the question, did the 350 get removed from the horn button and the gas cap during the same time frame?  Or as stock ran out?
