location of 12bolt axle stamps

quick question -  i've seen 3-4 Camaro/Nova 12bolts in my day and the stamps always seemed to be on the pass side tube facing forward.... (at least that is my memory at the moment)

were the axle stamps ALWAYS in the same place? I suspect because its probably more accessible when the transverse muffler is hanging in place - - or was it stamped prior to assembly, and just the way it was - or is just odds that the ones I've looked at all are in the same place?

The axles were stamped in the plant where the axles were fabricated/assembled, NOT in the Camaro assembly plant!   Yes, I think all the GM axles (in that time period) were stamped identically.

I would think the stamping was done at the axle plant.

The date stamping was done at the axle plants and it is the date the unit was assembled. There is also a casting date on the center section.

In the mid/late 60s and early 70s, Chevrolet axles were in the same location. I can't say for sure if other GM divisions always followed that. They may have, I just can't say for sure.

Pretty sure Pontiac Firebirds and GTOs had it in the same location as Chevrolet.

First Gen Firebird codes were as you say, on the drivers side axle tube.

I have been under way too many A body GM cars, probably over a thousand. GTOs, Chevelles, Skylarks...

The Chevrolet data I posted above I believe is correct.  I guess the best thing would be to search for a site for a particular model because I know at some point Firebird axle codes went to the passenger side and GTOs changed from one side to the other depending on year.

Never mind I went back to your other thread about parts you are looking for. Car is 09D of 1969.

You may find a 3.73 but 4.10 will be tougher and 4.56 extremely hard to find that date in my opinion.

My friend has a 71 Trans Am that we restored & axle code is on the front pass side
