Matching date for wheels
« on: May 12, 2015, 12:11:54 AM »
Hello guys and all Camaro fans !

I'm new here as I'm currently buying a 69 RS Daytona yellow, my first muscle car ever!  The car is a matching numbers LM-1, with all the original components, except for the wheels. So I'm looking for original Rally wheels for my RS.

After searching on the web, I realized that the wheels required, are 14x6 Rally, coded XN (drum brakes). Now I'm wondering about the built date for the wheels ? I want the car as original as possible for exposition, so if the car has been built the second week of september 68, what would be the perfect match for the wheel's built date ? Before September of course, but does 5 or 6 months before would preserve the originality of the car ?

Congratulations on your purchase!

While I don't have an XN example other 09B Camaros have wheels dated mid-late August.

Ok, well that's pretty much the same date everyone says through the forum I've been.

Normally, does all 4 wheels should have the same built date or it might be different dates ? I'll keep searching...very often only two identical wheel are for sale, it'll be difficult to find 4 !

I can't wait to drive the car !!!! So far I'll be running on 15x7 Rally wheels from heartbeatcamaro, and keep searching the proper 14x6 NX set.

You will find all five rims were the same "batch" in most cases. The spare is always the same type of wheel unless the space saver spare was ordered.

Yes, I've read comments elsewhere that suggest that Kelsey Hayes punched out different coded rims in batches [makes sense], which would lead to different vehicles over a range of build dates who qualified for that particular code rim, having the same dated rims fitted to all of them.

Good luck with your search. Keep your eye on ebay and start to track the various dates that are out there. XN isn't that common and there might only be 1 date that is best for your car. It took me 20 years to put together 5 XGs with the same dates for my 68 so you will need to be patient and persistent. Martin

Wow, that's hardcore patience!! Took me about 7 years with ebay saved search term 'xg rally', then just recently someone came up with 4 matching with correct stamp and tyres still mounted, so rim interior and beads had been kept protected from 'white ants'.
Front and rear surfaces still had good paint and were in top condition - couldn't click buy now quick enough!!   :D

My car has original xn wheels dated may 69, same month the car was made. I am considering going with disc brakes for safety sake so I will be changing the rims.
