Specific '67 grill question ?? tab or no tab??
« on: November 11, 2006, 02:41:18 PM »
I have a specific question with regard to the standard grill on a '67 Camaro.
Just inboard of the headlight bezel, ...I noticed one of the cars I have has this 'tab' on the grill  (that is covered by the h/l bezel when properly installed), ...yet another car I have does NOT have the tab.

   With the 'tab': http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/HVClassics/CamaroGeneral/IMG_0635.jpg

   WithOUT the 'tab': http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/HVClassics/CamaroGeneral/IMG_0637.jpg

I recently purchase a grill (where it is claimed to be "NOS"), ...and it does NOT have the tab. I am beginning to wonder if the part I received is indeed NOS, ...or an aftermarket part placed in the GM box.

Part I received claimed to be NOS: http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/HVClassics/CamaroGeneral/IMG_0640.jpg

  Two questions:
1.) Is the tab characteristic of an NOS part, ...or did NOS parts come both ways?
2.) Aside from the tab, ...how can you tell an NOS grill from an aftermarket?

  Thanks,
             Kevin

...Didn't forget you Steve : ), ...had a busy week, ...then fall Carlisle, ...and then a rainy weekend.
It is actually sunny here today, ...so I will be able to back the car out and take a look at things (after I read your other post to see what I'm going to look for

I can supply an answer.  Will require a trade though.  :)  Answer these questions http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1087.msg6228#msg6228.
Also need build date, NOR/LOS, and ask that you check to see if there are any numbers as described in this post (between the circles) http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1087.msg7428#msg7428.

Kevin

On page 150 of the 67 AIM, DWG PREL 12-20, DATE REL 3-1, UPC 11-13, Sheet B6, it clearly shows a tab on item number 3, which is the center grille and listed as part number 3891693.  It is interesting to note that the 67 grille does not show up individually in the early (10/1/66) or later (10/1/67) P&A as being available separately.  It was only available as an assembly (upper/center/lower) under part number 3905745 and later superseded (12/68) to 3929281.  The 10/1/70 P&A and other GM "books" up to 4/83 show 3891693 as a separate item for sale.  It would appear the part you bought is a GM brand reproduction of the original without the tab.  To answer your #2....One of the ways we are trying to ID the 68 RS grille in that thread is by the mold cavity (between the circles).  It may be possible, after some research, to ID the 67 that way.
