Hey Kurt,

Thanks for the feedback, this is disappointing for sure. I am new to this subject so forgive me for asking but are you 100% certain? Could the picture be deceiving? The PO has two independent appraisals that state this car is real... They could be full of it, just trying to cover my bases here. Also what is memorex, is that a method of restamping? I did a search but only came up with threads like "Is it real or memorex"

So now assuming you are correct how can I even tell what this motor is? It drives like a real 302 but I would hate to push it to 7K RPM and blow it because it's not a DZ... Is there any way to tell without disassembling it? My hope is that the VIN and Assembly stamp are fake and that this is a real DZ motor that was just restamped to fit this car.

Based on the condition of the car and the options I still think I got a great deal I just want to be sure what it is that I actually have.

thanks

Jeremy, watch this and you will understand Kurt's term "Memorex"

Lacquer thinner on a rag also works well to clean off the engine deck to see the numbers and letters better.  Can't tell about the broach marks from the pictures posted.

Was the block casting number and casting date posted?  Did you check dates on the heads?

Hey All,

Ah yes I remember memorex, I am new to this game so thought it was some specific way to make fake stamps  ;D

Well I tried to upload photos but it keeps failing

Heads: Correct casting (3927186) and dated L188 which I believe is Dec 18 1968
Read End:12 Bolt Posi 4:10 gears dated L178 or Dec 17 1968
Transmission: M21 casting number 3925660 not sure where the date is but the vin is there
Exhaust Doubler plate is present and if I read correctly this is only on Z's, SS's & COPO's

In my opinion, it's a restamp. I see several things wrong with it and I won't say if I don't feel confident.
If I didn't have stampings to compare it to, I'd have thought it was an original - it looks good.

Trans was listed as P9T17A, axle BU1220G.

Im sure you have already thought of this or looked into it but..

Is it possible you had one person on 1st shift stamping the blocks and another on 2nd?  Do you have other stampings using the same or similar fonts and styles at a different date range?

The stamp was setup at the start of the day, not the shift.

You could allways pull the drivers head and see if the deck has been messed with, then post pictures?

How are you determining the trans and axle?

Car was for sale awhile back. Looks like the axle is BV, not BU.
