valve confusion
« on: August 09, 2014, 07:03:50 AM »
I got a call from my machine shop today letting me know the valves I had purchased to replace my originals were too small.
I have a 350/300 with 041 heads and purchased the 1.94 and 1.50 valves
Are these not the correct valves? What other valves would be in 041 heads?
This was a Tonawanda built motor so it should not have 2.02/1.60. am I right with this thinking?
I know the history of the car and know the heads have only been off twice, once to repair a head gasket and when I replaced the rings.

Colvin in CBTN shows the 041 was used (I assume in rare cases) as an alternative head on the Z's, and unverified as the Corvette 350/350 heads. I guess it might be possible that they could have been installed on a 350/300 by mistake (same 041 head with 1.94/1.50 valves). Depends on how long you have known the engine - possible upgrade at some point to the 2.02/1.60 valves ?

Aberrations are difficult to explain, even more difficult to verify.

I understand that they could have used, though not very likely, a 041 head on a 302 or a 350/350 - but from what I know, those types of motors were all built at Flint. I am under the impression that Tonawanda did not build any of the 302 or 350/350 motors, thus would not have had a need to install the larger valves

Have a look at the combustion chamber and see if the area around the intake side is machined(side wall of chamber) If it is still rough cast, it was changed from 1.94. Not a definite, but a good indicator IMO.

I got a call from my machine shop today letting me know the valves I had purchased to replace my originals were too small.

Valve head too small or valve stem too small?
