Hey now "crappy sound" ? some guys still have that (optional) exhaust on their cars !! It's just like Hugger Orange to me: some guys really like it, but to other guys its just ok...

(if my car would have sounded like that, I would have had to make an adjustment first thing)

The "blatty" exhaust note results from the cross-ram setup not having a crossover passage (just like the 1957-1965 Rochester fuel injections on Corvettes), which makes it sound like two different 4-cylinder engines, and a poor tuning job.

The backup lights are on because the backdrive rod is missing due to interference with the headers, and the lever at the base of the steering column is wired up to the brake booster so the ignition switch is free to operate without the rod in place. See that every day on cars with headers.

Interesting, I thought it was an Ohio thing. BITD All us hot rod guys would have the reverse lights wired to a secret toggle under the dash and flip it on as a sign a race is on or desired. We would also flip on the reverses when pulling into the Big Boy Drive-In to look cool and to put others on notice we were looking for a race.

Thats funny to hear that. I have been around street racing since the early 90's, we would meet in Santa Clara at a Weinersnitzel, we would get run out of the parking lots of some of the other places by the police, trying to break us up. Our cars were all different ranges though, so you knew (roughly) how quick each car was, so you knew which match ups would be worth putting together. OR if you had enough guys wanting to run, we would head out , some times we would get a few races in before the cop showed up, other times you could run all night and you might see over 40 races, before you called it a night. Of course road conditions played a huge part in how well some guys got out of the hole.
