Need some help with Engine Pad stamp
« on: May 01, 2014, 11:58:59 PM »
I'm helping a friend detail a '67 SS 396 Chevelle he just bought.  I know some of you guys are real good at decoding engine pad stamps.  I've never seen one like this.  The last 4 digits are stamped really deep and a little larger.  The pics. I've posted aren't that great, I apologize for that.  The stamp reads TO228IVR   6R20  4213   You can make out in second pic. the last 4 digits are way deeper and little larger.  The casting # is correct for a '67 396 Block.  Any help is appreciated.

My book shows T0228 = Feb. 28th.  IVR = Passenger car 396 / 325 HP, Auto Trans in 1966.

You have a 396/325 with a Rochester Q-Jet and a Turbo 400. The engine was assembled at the Tonawanda, NY engine plant on February 28th, 1966 and installed in a 1966 full size car built at the Arlington, TX factory. The casting number should be 3855961 which was used in 1965 and 1966. (The 1967 casting number would be 3902406.)

And yes, it's not unusual to see 1966 VIN stamps with different fonts and/or sizes.

See if he can get the casting date.  Should be a 3855961 block.

Yes guys, my bad.  The casting # is 3855961 but couple of places I looked said that Block was used in '67.  (ie; my comment correct casting)  Sorry!
