Yes, 396 cars with TH400 appear to have received the 42A alternator. I'd be curious if someone can find that in the 67 Camaro literature.

I'm looking for a reference to Camaro 396/TH400 but I did find this on a Chevelle site; http://chevellestuff.net/qd/alt_numbers.htm
Check the section titled "1967 - 283/327/396" optional 42 amp (std w/TH400 (stamped "CS") (RPO K79)    1100696    42

In addition, I see quite a few 696 alternators on eBay and many are stating for Camaro, Chevelle or Vette BB's. There sure seems to be a correlation.

Back to investigating for Camaro...........

Thanks Mike for the pictures!!   It's always nice to see other BB's with auto transmission as there are not that many out there.  I like to see the way your smog pump is mounted as mine is not there anymore after many years being gone.  Who knows what ever happened to it as many were discarded.
I am more confused ??? to why you have what looks like a 3 groove pulley on your water pump?  Maybe I can't see it right in the pics?  Was that added later?  I don't have it.  If I can get pictures to upload here I will post some pictures of mine.  My 67 does have the 3 groove cast iron pulley for the crank.  The first pulley groove (inner from the engine out) goes from the crankshaft to the water pump, then the alternator.  The second groove should go from the crank to the water pump up to the air pump.  (Someone routed this on mine to the alternator via a 2 groove pulley on the alternator.)  The third pulley groove goes directly from the crank to the power steering pump.
Does yours have power steering?  According to the A.I.M. page 86, upper right hand corner of the page, it shows the routing.  It doesn't show anywhere a 2 groove pulley for the alternator on any pages.  Someone must have put a 2 groove alternator pulley on mine to make it look better like a smog pump was never installed.  I wish I had an original smog pump for mine with the tubing/lines for originality.  Maybe you would sell me yours?  ;) ;)  I would be more interested in that carb you have! ;) ;)  LOL!

Another note I forgot to mention........it makes more sense for a single groove pulley on the alternator as the upper radiator hose is very close to the pulley on mine as well.            Heiferduster

Here are closeups of the belt routing.
The bottom is a 3 groove cast iron pulley. On the water pump there is a 2-groove pulley, which 2 belts ride on, to drive the alternator and a single groove pulley concatenated to the 2 groove unit with the belt that drives the smog air pump and P/S pump. The spacer on the fan has a P/N of 3857042. Even with a dual alternator pulley there is plenty of space between that and the upper hose. As for the manual not showing a 2 groove pulley, remember that there are several inaccuracies in that manual.
Look at eBay for these pumps. I do see them from time to time. And to think, people used to remove and throw these away and now it's a hot commodity.

Thanks Mike.  I might just nix on putting the smog pump etc. on there again.  I did find out that by looking at your pictures that I have the incorrect air cleaner base, as I don't have the one extra tube for the air pump supply.  :( Trying to get the right smog pump with attaching $$$ bracket and hoses etc. just make it not fun.  Who knows, maybe I will get happy and keep looking.  For now, it's the 1100696 alternator.  I'll find one in my price range for this car eventually.  It's not that I'm cheap ;D but some of those e pay prices are not what I want to do just now especially for used ones!    I like the originality of your car.  Don't change it!

Do you have the original motor in your car? If so what is the engine prefix? Mine is an MZ which designates a K19 equipped motor.
The prefix would indicate if yours came with K19 or not.

Yes.  My engine is the original mz coded.  Built jan 67 at the tonawanda? Spelling? Plant.  It has the exhause manifold holes for the smog pump.  I also have the correct fan spacer 3857042 like you haveback on the car.  I just don't have it installed with the 4 blade fan.  Someone had a five blade flex fan on there.  I put the 4 blade back on but not the spacer.  I need to do that now that I found it.
