Saw that ad (I think it's been relisted at least once) and seller states it has been lightly decked.... but you can still make out the numbers. The partial is very close to my car's VIN, but not quite close enough :(

I am not going to question your knowledge or ability to spot a restamp, but I am surprised someone would go through the trouble of decking and re-stamping and then just somewhat pick a random number to stamp on a block, hoping that 1 he didn't stamp a number that somebody already has, and 2 if nobody has it that they will see his ad. Seems like a long shot on his part is all.

I thought all the LA cars had it on the pad, and Norwood switched this around January 1st of 69. I am pretty sure it is on the CRG here somewhere .
The only thing I notice is it looks like the numbers for the vin were stamped separately, and other examples of original LA blocks look like the vin number was stamped with a single gang, and looks more uniform. In Jerrys book the font seems to differ slightly as well, but I have not seen nearly as many as Kurt. If it were me I would want the guy to provide a lot more pics of the stamp, and get the input from CRG before I made a trip to see it in person.

thats good info, I see where it says Norwood started stamping down there beginning in January 69. In jerrys book it says for LOS cars they have been found as late as april with the vin appearing on the pad.

You would have thought that it would have been changed over to the filter, and then not been stamped on the pad any longer. A discrepancy in Jerrys book possibly?

LA conntinued to stamp the pad Norwood changed to the filter boss... If I am not mistaken it was due to LA being a GMAD plant and Norwood being a Fisher Body/ Chevrolet Assembly plant.

A guy I know of has a well-documented early LA car with VIN 50xxxx that has the partial at the oil filter location. At the time I saw the stamp, I thought this was an odd location and checked the CRG page, which confirmed that the Van Nuys usage of the deck pad and oil filter area was inconsistent and varied between the 2 locations.
