Matching numbers
« on: September 22, 2006, 04:14:51 PM »
I'm trying to match my engine numbers with my VIN# but I'm confused on what I think I'm finding.  VIN#124378L302978 Engine Code T1129HC.  From what I can tell it's a 1969 L65 350ci 250hp 4 spd. Can someone help me better understand the numbers?

It could be any number of engines. The "HC" suffix was used for the following applications:

1965 Full Size 327/250 4BBL Powerglide
1967 & 1968 Full Size 327/275 4BBL Powerglide
1969 Nova, Chevelle or Camaro 350/250 2BBL 3 or 4 speed

Check the casting date of the block to narrow it down.

If it is a 69 block for a camaro or firebird the vin would be down by the oil filter,67 and 68 vins were stamped on the pass side in front of the head on the pad.if there is just an engine code there most likely its down by the oil filter

The Engine code is stamped on the block near the altenator.  The local Chevy dealer is telling me its a 68 327ci/275hp powerglide.  Ricks First Gen tells me the same except they also say its out of an early model 68 Camaro.

Then the vin should be on the pad where the engine code is.

But like Ed said, HC was not used in Camaro until 69.

Again, get the casting date and/or the casting number and that will tell you what engine it is.

The guy you spoke to at Rick's is mistaken. 68 Camaro 327/275 engine codes are:

EA - 3 speed or 4 speed
EE - Powerglide
